Is grateful for all he has done in “genuine Christian charity”. Archbishop has much in common with Dr. Dignam, Bishop of Clonfert, who did his duty. But Dr. Dignam made one mistake. He was too honest “for our newcomers to the ballot box”, and went down gloriously. “Right under Might.” The working-class pray that similar just prelates do not suffer same fate. Earnest wish is that Labour leaders of future will pay respect to bishops.

Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. + McQuaid renewed the faculties of the members of the Committee to read Communist literature. Fr. McMahon to supply list of names the Committee can use to seek information on Communist activities. A Catholic, Laurence Roche, has been elected President of the Philosophical Society in Trinity College. He has strong socialist tendencies.

Typed letter to +McQuaid from S.A. Roche, Office of the Minister for Justice. In Ireland there is no provision in law whereby a person who adopts a child may acquire parental rights over the child. The question of legal adoption is again raised, and opposed by the Catholic Protection and Rescue Society of Ireland. Wonders if the danger visualized by the Catholic Protection & Rescue Society Ireland would be met if a provision were included prohibiting the making of an adoption order in any case where it is not proved to the Court that the religion of the adopter and the child are the same.

Copy of typed letter to Fr. Farrell from the Secretary informing him of Mr. Roche’s letter regarding lectures on the anti-Communist Underground Movement behind the Iron Curtain. Perhaps Fr. Farrell would explain to Mr. Roche that + McQuaid feels such lectures could harm Catholics under persecution.

Copy of typed letter to Fr. Farrell, Clontarf, from the Secretary saying that Mr. Roche is still at a loss to know whether or not to proceed with the lectures on anti-Communist Underground. Thinks it should be clear to Mr. Roche that these are not advisable. The reference to a more positive approach is to remind Catholics of the sufferings of the Church of Silence.
