Typed draft of an article/speech titled ‘The Writer’ by Peadar O’Donnell. Would come near defining a writer when they reveal people “behaving and misbehaving towards one another.” The writer needs freedom and in Ireland he enjoys less than any other country. Irish writers are shut in and silenced by their job and “conditioned to bark if they want to prosper as emigrants to America.” Perhaps Ireland’s greatest cultural crime has been her waste of the poet Patrick Kavanagh.
Handwritten letter to + McQuaid from Patrick Roche, Secretary, the Richard Corish Branch, Irish Labour Party, Rosslare Harbour. Thanked the Archbishop for his visit to James Larkin. Is grateful for all he has done in “genuine Christian charity”. Archbishop has much in common with Dr. Dignam, Bishop of Clonfert, who did his duty. But Dr. Dignam made one mistake. He was too honest “for our newcomers to the ballot box”, and went down gloriously. “Right under Might.” The working-class pray that similar just prelates do not suffer same fate. Earnest wish is that Labour leaders of future will pay respect to bishops.
Typed letter to + McQuaid from David Pigot. The National Graves’ Commission lodged a proposed inscription with the Committee to go on the memorial of Lieut. General Patrick McGrath. The Committee could not accept the wording. McGrath was executed in Mountjoy Prison on 6 September 1940. The inscription suggested that McGrath was a member of the National Defence Force and died in defence of the state.
Handwritten letter to Rev. and Dear Father from Patrick J. Quinn. He is disturbed that he has not received any indication of the Archbishop’s reaction to his design.
Typed letter to + McQuaid from Sean Fitzpatrick, Runaidhe Onorach, National Graves’ Association. The relatives of the Six I.R.A. men executed by the late Government have written to the Committee asking that they apply for the Remains to enable them to have a Christian Burial. He would be grateful if the Archbishop would ‘grant permission’ in the cases of Patrick MacGrath, Thomas Harte, Maurice O’Neill and Charles Kerins.
Typed letter to Fr. J.A. MacMahon from Chief Superintendent Philip MacMahon. The only Dr. Woods at 3 Fitzwilliam Place is the chief Ear, Nose and Throat specialist at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital. His daughter is married to Mark Hely-Hutchinson, son and heir to Lord Dunoughmore, Grand Master of the Freemason Order in Ireland. Enquiries failed to reveal the existence of the ‘Vietnam’ group of which Dr. Woods is stated to be Secretary.
Typed report on the Left-Wing Labour group, of which Patrick Gibbons is also a member. He was an active Communist 20 years ago. Some members who were expelled from the Dun Laoire Branch of the Labour Party are involved in the group. The group is to work secretly to create such a position within the Labour Party that would force Mr. William Norton, Minister for Industry and Commerce, to resign.
Copy letter from Fr. James Ardle MacMahon to Fr. Crean regarding the proposals from the last committee meeting. He states Fr. Roland Burke-Savage was to ask Patrick Masterson to write an article on censorship for ‘Studies’ and suggests one of the committee approach him about this.
Letter from T. O Raifeartaigh, Ballsbridge to +McQuaid enclosing an article he wrote on St. Patrick (not here). Annotated by +McQuaid.
