              Handwritten report with copy of Jack Murphy’s paper enclosed. Financed by Cyril Murray. Murray asked Newman, Irish Times, for biographical data on Dr. Ryan. He refused. Sean McGowan advised him to get Liam Skinner’s book. Fr. McAnliffe read Murphy’s work and said he would not publish any ‘red’ stuff. David McCelland, born in New Zealand, sold his publishing company and bought a farm in Roscrea. Is an atheist and in touch with Jaffares. Wife a practicing Catholic.

              Copy of typed letter to Bishop Daniel Mageean from + McQuaid informing him that he had asked Dr. Newman not to give lecture in Belfast in connection with Dr. Hildegarde Mayr’s visit as he is concerned about her activities. She is Secretary of a group affiliated to a Communist world front. He refused to see her.

              Handwritten letter to + McQuaid from Dr. Mageean, Belfast, thanking him for his timely intervention. Dr. Newman informed him that he had been invited by the Association of International Reconstruction and the Irish Pacifist Movement to speak on the subject of Church-State problems. Dr. Mageean had no objection. Dr. Newman did not tell him who the prime mover was, but the name would have meant little to him. Is grateful for the action the Archbishop has taken.

              Correspondence, memoranda and reports relating to the Missionary Service Centre, later to become the Irish Missionary Union, under its secretary, Fr. Pelly, S.J. Memorandum on its origins at suggestion of Fr. Jeremiah Newman (later Bishop of Limerick) and its aims. Missionary Summer schools are help. Two doctors based in Drogheda suggest recruitment of lay doctors of mission territories.
