Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. The following items are mentioned in the report: Murphy, T.D., was recently elected as the T.D. as the candidate for the unemployed. He was only in Ireland for about six weeks so it is difficult to understand how he organised support. Fr. Tuohy to make enquiries. Brannigan held a meeting in the Mansion House, attendance 80 achieved nothing. It was suggested that the ‘liberals’ seem to have easy access to Radio Eireann. Director, Mr. Gorham, a stranger. Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. The following items are mentioned in the report: Fr. Kent reported that the Bishop of Ferns told a friend that Murphy, T.D., was a Communist. He was previously employed by the British Air Ministry. College of Scientology: as far as the Committee was able to discover the College is not a cover for something (abortion) but is merely a bogus form of psychology and character formation. Dr. Morris, an Inspector of Mental Homes for the British Government, called on Fr. O’Halloran regarding a complaint from a parishioner. The Committee considered a number of recent happenings on the world of trade unions and for connections between them. Larkin, Nevin, John Nolan, Jeffares and Brannigan were mentioned. Nevin and Larkin had no hope of getting their idea of Full Employment across as there was no unity in the trade union movement. The CIU would have nothing to do with Larkin. Brannigan was distributing some East German illustrated magazines (English language). The Communists are concentrating on trade unions and this may be due to the “loss of the intellectuals” in Hungary.

Handwritten notes on St. Vincent de Paul headed notepaper stating that Murphy, the unemployed candidate, is not a Communist but is being used by them. His electioneering (lories, posters, etc) is being done by Jeffares, Nolan, Carmady and C. Murphy, who is just back from Russia. They have helped with his deposit. Murphy interned as IRA member in 1941. Asked if anything can be done about McQuilea in Roscommon?

Hears that Browne is trying to get Jack Murphy, unemployed candidate, for new party. Murphy went to Belfast for labour school. Met Marion, a good Catholic, prints IRA paper as a business proposition. Would not touch Communist stuff.
