Letter expressing regret to Fr. Prior that she missed him while he was in Dublin. She had wished to speak to him on a matter of conscience.

              TEXT

              My dear Father Prior,
There is many thanks for your note. You know I shall be always only too happy to see you, but I do not expect you to come to see me each time you are up, unless I can do anything for you.

Last time, I fear it was this reason why I was very anxious to meet you. I had something (a matter of conscience) on which I wanted to ask your advice. So when I got no ring from you to say you were in town, I rang up myself on Tuesday to hear you had flown. So I wrote of then ito Fr. Kelly and got an answer on Thursday, so all was well.

I miss Dom David more than I can say. He was always, so helpful. I have come to the conclusion now that he has gone, and Fr. Kelly so far away. It is better for me to seek a good confessor in Dublin. Things crop up so often, especially now in my peculiar circumstances, that need advice.

May I ask you please to say Mass on the 3rd Oct, the feast of the Little Flower, and another on Monday the 4th Oct, for the special intentions and spiritual growth of M.M.M. and Glenstal. 2) for His Excellency the Nuncio’s intentions.

I had also intended, if I met you, to ask you and your Community to pray very specially for M.M.M. during these next few weeks and that we may have a Novitiate House very soon, wherever God wills it.

I am glad Mary Murphy returned to you and hope she will be really helpful to Miss Feeney. May God bless all your work at Glenstal

              TEXT

              My dear Father,
I await the answer to my were before going to see Miss McKenna. I feel so strongly in justice she should at least know of the vacancy and apply to you.

She might not consider it, taking on both work; on the other hand, she may.

She got on well with the boys and parents, kept their wardrobe beautiful, and can take over without much explaining.

Your wire has just arrived. I shall go and see her and if she is anxious to take the post. I shall advise her to write directly to you.

Now about the ties, they cannot be traced at Lyzon. Will you please post me correspondence on this matter with Dom Columba? They cannot remember them and say they may have just ordered a few dozen. Perhaps Miss Murphy would find one in the vestry. So please post up.

We shall soon have all in order with God’s help.

I see by all your letters you are very tired, have not had the time to sit down to think things out. We shall settle all when I return. You will then have estimate from Clery’s and we can compare prices, etc. On Monday, I shall have your decision on color and then go ahead without fear.

I think it was the color the boys objected to, but they will get over that when there is so much.

I wish I could take over all this for you, but I see so clearly you really like to decide all, and in these matters our tastes are not the same, so my only desire is to carry out your wishes in all things.

No house yet, but I shall return early next week, probably having come back early in Sept.

I think that girl you spoke of was good, but remember you bring back all past history Glenstal, a new group. Fr. David can advise you best on this question; he know everything. I was glad to see him looking better and bringing two novices to you; that will cheer you up.

I hope Our Lord will accept the little I try to do for Glenstal as an act of love and not allow M.M.M. to suffer by the little extra delay.

It is hard on my daughters being so much away, but they all understand it is necessary for them and Glenstal. But I have no time to do much about vocations.

With grateful thanks for your letter. I am sorry to hear Miss R’s visit was not very fruitful. Prayer is what will help her most. She needs so much grace.

report of meeting with a Bishop

              AI CLEANED TEXT

According to your counsel we went today to approach His Grace. The interview was short. I hope it was useful even if no success has been actually reported presently. I shall try to tell you the things as exactly as I remember.

              I was introduced about 15.50. I began:
"I come on a business which I hope will interest the diocese of Cashel and be useful to Glenstal. I wonder if Your Grace has already read the recent Instruction of the Propaganda about the medical care to be given to the mothers and babies."
His Grace: "I have nothing to do..."

"They want first of all a house in Dublin or Cork and that is essential. Let them approach the Archbishop of Dublin, and, as he accepts, I may then consider myself the affair."
I: "Excuse me, but I think the novitiate is the first to be decided, as they will not go to the University before receiving good religious formation."
H.G.: "No no, that novitiate is only a year to prepare them for the real trial, the training in Dublin. So, let us first ascertain with the Archbishop of Dublin. (L'ordine logico, è questo [The logical order is this])."

Since that moment, impossible to get other, and His Grace concludes: "This is the canonical way. So approach the Archbishop of Dublin and if accepted, to bring the thing to me, and I will consider it."
I tried to explain to Him that Ms Martin was about to write to Rome, in order to put herself at the disposal of the Holy See, and ask for directions.
He only answered that the canonical law was Dublin-Cashel.

Having nothing more to say or to hear, I went out. We hesitated if it would be better for Ms Martin to go herself — I thought the useful time was over. We saw then the secretary, Fr O'Connor. We got nothing very definite from him. He dissuaded from returning to His Grace — moreover, it was a few minutes before his dinner — but thought well to give him the letter destined to the Cardinal by Ms Martin. He will present it himself, and let His Grace reflect, and make at ease his mind on the case.

In a further interview I had alone with him, he expressed that probably His Grace will like to come in touch with the Archbishop. "The Bishops of Ireland want to keep in good relations. Those persons are most [in order?]. And His Grace would not like to seem interfering in their projects, with His Colleagues. And so, we are sure that the answer will be delayed — and for [a] long time. But, as the Archbishop knows now in what intention she goes to Rome, he would be not right if he felt offended by the sending of the prepared letter and we can go ahead without expecting."

              Don't [forget?]
Baciando il sacro anello, mi confermo di Sua Eccellenza A. [Devotissi]mo
[Kissing the sacred ring, I confirm myself Your Excellency's most devoted]

              with the Propaganda.
I.: "No, but the instruction could interest you."
H.G.: "Was it published in the Acta?"
I.: "I don't know but I have here the text."
His Grace reads attentively, somewhat terse. When he declared: "I don't see anything for me in that."
I.: "The question is that we have in Glenstal some girls, with Ms Martin who think of some Work..."
              "You remember..."
H.G. sharply: "I remember indeed, I refused absolutely to establish any sort of religious congregation."
I.: "Of course, but the situation is somewhat different now. The Holy See invites to form new Congregations, and I thought it would be great to start immediately in Ireland in our diocese. I know many others are contemplating to make something in accordance with Rome's views. The Holy Child [Nuns] come from England into Meath, another group is coming from America to recruit in Cork. And for Glenstal it would be a big loss to see them go else[where]. We were so satisfied of the good services they did to the Priory and College."
H.G.: "What do you intend to do?"
I.: "They would have a novitiate there."
H.G.: "I don't like to have another community at Glenstal."
I.: "Or they will build a new house, and send then their members for medic[al] [studies]."
