Correspondence relating to comprehensive education involving + McQuaid, Sean MacGearailt, Fr. Liam Martin and Donogh O’Malley. +McQuaid wished to remind the Minister that on at least three occasions he was given firm assurances by the Minister that a comprehensive school would not be established in Dublin. A proposal to change that assurance would profoundly shock the confidence of the Archbishop. Regarding Ballymun, +McQuaid had already arranged for ample post-primary education with the Christian Brothers and Dominican Sisters. In response the Minister said he was of the opinion that no such global guarantee should have been sought. He would expect that he would not be met with a situation in which the Archbishop would think that he was the person to decide what is ample post-primary education for any area in the Diocese. For +McQuaid these views were gravely erroneous. Notes on meeting between Mother M. Jordana and Mgr. J. O’Regan on the one side and Martin Gleeson, Mr. Donegan and Mr. McCarthy on the other. Handwritten letter to Fr. McKernan from Desmond W. McCarthy, Cork St., Dublin, reporting on Philip Cairns and Alderman Hickey. Cairns converted out of conviction in 1921, is a zealous Catholic Action worker, secretary of the Postal Workers’ Union and member of the Labour Party. Puts his Catholicism first. Hickey is an excellent Catholic and a director of the Catholic Standard. Typed report. The following items are mentioned in the report: The Differential Rents Association held a meeting in Crumlin. Attendance included Lemass and Briscoe. All aspects of rent system discussed. McCarthy, Secretary, said it would be best to leave things as were rather than have Prescott and Communists represent them. Grumley, a postman in Pearse Street PO, is being used by the Communists. Mrs Sheehy-Skeffington has resigned as Secretary of the IHA due to ill health. The ICA refused to allow the IHA affiliate with them. Fr. Twohig promised to give Councillor Matt Cullen the history of Trinity and the Scholarship Scheme but has not done so.

Copy of note saying Fr. McCarthy would be opposed to any organised take-over of his church by a group who wished to hold a prayer meeting without the Archbishop’s consent.

Copy of letter from + McQuaid to Mgr. Charles Hurley asking him to instruct Fr. McCarthy to remove the Blessed Sacrament at 2 p.m. on Sunday, take away the veil and open wide the two tabernacles. He should not be in the Church around 3.30 p.m.
