Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. Its function this year is to report to + McQuaid in detail on officials of the various trade unions. Each member was given 22 trade unions with names of officials. The V. Rev. Chairman had a report, compiled by the Knights of Columbanus in 1948, on Communist members and their activities. Fr. Crean was delegated to approach Colonel Callaghan, the Head of Army Intelligence, to update the list of Communist Party members. Information was sought on journalists Brian O’Neill, Tony Malone, Annie Kelly, Maurice Hickey, Don Rooney and Michael McInerney.

Letter from Thomas D. Malone, Hon. Sec., to + McQuaid. They have repeatedly asked Archdeacon D. O Ceallachain for the use of the Parish Hall for Junior and Senior youth clubs and recreation for old folks. The Archdeacon has done nothing but try to undermine their work by every underhanded method. This cannot be tolerated any longer and begs his intervention. Otherwise more serious action will be taken.

Copy of letter from Mgr. Cecil J. Barrett to Thomas Malone informing him that he had discussed the matter with the Parish Priest, who expressed his good will towards the Tenants’ Association. Many parish groups wish to use the facilities and as such it is impossible to meet all requests.

Copy of letter from the Secretary (formulated by + McQuaid) to T.D. Malone. His Grace regrets any difficulty. He regrets that it could be suggested that the Archbishop would ‘throw your letter to the wind’; also, that you threaten ‘more serious action’ if your request is unheeded. His Grace has never yet found it necessary to act under threat.
