Notes compiled by John O’Connell (1843-1905), a grandson of Daniel O’Connell, ‘The Liberator’. The book contains accounts of various Provincial Chapters of the Capuchin Order in Ireland, records of personnel changes in various Capuchin communities, and notes on meetings and other activities of the Third Order of St. Francis in Kilkenny. Records include membership and ordination lists. Newspaper cuttings are pasted into the volume. A photographic print of the Capuchin Friary at Rochestown in also extant in the volume. The list includes the names of Brothers Sylvester Mulligan, Angelus Healy, Stanislaus Kavanagh and Albert Bibby’.
Community lists for the Capuchin Friary, Walkin Street, Kilkenny. The lists are titled ‘Family of Kilkenny’ and are dated: 12 Dec. 1895, 5 Sept. 1901, 22 Sept. 1913, and 10 Aug. 1916.
Conveyance from the Most Rev. Abraham Brownrigg, Roman Catholic Bishop of Ossory, to Fr. Thomas O’Connor OSFC (otherwise Fr. Matthew) and Fr. Michael Neary OSFC (otherwise Fr. Fidelis) of the two dwelling houses known as the Alms House ‘situated between the Friary Chapel and fronting [onto] Lower Walkin Street, parish of St. Mary’s, Kilkenny city’. The conveyance was signed as part of mutual exchange with the Capuchin friars for the two dwelling houses known as ‘The Munster Arms’. With the corresponding agreement of the same date for the lease for ever by Fr. O’Connor and Fr. Neary to Bishop Brownrigg of the two houses formerly called ‘The Munster Arms’. Copy writ of summons from Nicholas Shorthal, solicitor, 54 Middle Abbey Street, Dublin, to Fr. Thomas O’Connor OSFC to appear at the High Court of Justice (Probate and Matrimonial Division) in relation to a case of Peter Jackman, plaintiff, versus Charles and Catherine Dunphy, Rev. William Cassin, and Patrick Egan, defendants. The case involves a dispute about the will of John Jackman, late of King Street, Kilkenny (died 28 July 1895).
An exterior view of the old Capuchin Friary building on Walkin Street in Kilkenny. There appears to be scaffolding erected in the background. In December 1873, the foundation stone was laid for a new Friary running parallel to Walkin Street. In 1889 a lease was obtained for a small garden adjoining the Friary and in July 1896 the site of the old alms house was obtained from the Most Rev. Abraham Brownrigg (1836-1928), Bishop of Ossory. This allowed for the building of an additional wing to the Friary in 1897. This new wing was located at right angles to Walkin Street and extended to Pennyfeather Lane.
Quarterly income and expenditure account book for the Third Order of St. Francis, Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny, for 1896-1907. (cf. CA KK/4/2/3). The second portion of the volume consists of a monthly subscription record for 1937-46. The entries are listed under the name of the Third Order brother with a record of his monthly contribution.
The clippings relate mainly to notifications of public meetings, events, entertainments, and parades associated with the Boys’ Brigade, Church Street. Some of the clippings also provide lists of subscribers and details of fund-raising efforts. Includes clippings from the 'Freeman’s Journal', 'Daily Nation', 'Daily Express', and 'Evening Telegraph'. Some of the annotated clippings were loosely inserted into a hard-covered volume (21 cm x 14 cm) which was ink-stamped on the inside cover ‘Catholic Boys’ Brigade, Church Street, Dublin’.
