Although usually referred to as Portobello Bridge, the official name is La Touche Bridge, named after William Digges La Touche (1747-1803), the heir to a prominent Dublin business family and a director of the Grand Canal Company.

The image shows the structure in a rather dilapidated state (complete with pigeon coops fixed to the walls). In the 1990s, Selskar Gate underwent a complete restoration and was renamed West Gate Tower serving as an important reminder of Wexford’s built heritage.
