Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister:

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Letter to Arthur Devine from the Consultor General, Thomas, Rome, with reference to his letter of 14 inst. and alleged ruling from Propoganda to Dominicans re bishop's powers to grant faculties to religious (see item under serial number 1981). That is not the position. Dominican's have made a submision with that conclusion to Propaganda, but that congregation doesn't want to annoy Irish bishops, so no ruling has ben given. It is said that Bishop McAllister will meet the provincial before answering Propaganda on Passionists' submission. Thomas hopes to see Cardinal (Prefect?) and read him Arthur's letter re crying need for more confessors. Even if there was a clear cut law, it could be evaded.

Holy Cross Retreat: Ardoyne; Belfast: Dispute with Bishop McAllister.

Holy Cross Retreat: Ardoyne; Belfast: Dispute with Bishop McAllister. Letter from Fr Thomas, Consultor General, Rome, to Fr Arthur Devine, Highgate, London, acknowledging Arthur's of 23rd Nov. (copy of that letter is not extant in these archives). It's tone dishearten 's Thomas. We have to make some concessions, otherwise Bishop has stolen a march on us.
Fact we bought and paid for site is important, but if church is built on it we can't sell it or till it or ground-rent it. Also the reference to Bishop Dorrian slipping in his signature as a trustee could have been put better. Even if we won a case, the Sacred Congregation would not enforce it.
