Copy decree of Fr. Flavio Roberto Carraro OFM Cap., General Minister, for the establishment of the Capuchin Vice-Province of Southern Africa. The decree reads: ‘In response to the missionary call of Pope Pius XI and the invitation of the Apostolic Vicar of Cape Town, the Irish Capuchin Province of Saint Francis and Patrick extended its Capuchin Franciscan witness to South Africa, arriving in Cape Town on 20 October 1929. After overcoming many initial difficulties and having established a clear understanding of the commitment required of the Province in this missionary endeavour, the new plant began to take root and to grow’. The Vice-Provincial Minister was named as Fr. Sylvius McCarthy OFM Cap. (1931-2011).
Copy deed of conveyance from the FMC Trust, c/o Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny, to Edward and Corann Loughlin, 31 Thorndale Drive, Malahide Road, Artane, Dublin 5, of all premises and property situated at the junction of Friary Street and Garden Row with the yard at the rear thereof held in fee simple and subject to the terms and conditions as set down in the fee farm grant (29 Oct. 1898) from Penelope H. Colles and others to Fr. Matthew O’Connor OSFC and Fr. Fidelis Neary OSFC at an annual rent of £13 7s 8d. Consideration: £101,000. With draft copies, draft memorandum of agreement, draft conditions of sale and a blank memorial for registering the said deed in the Registry of Deeds.
Copy deed of election and covenants relating to an annuity of £50 granted by Thomas Douglas Yourell, Smithfield, to Rosetta Yourell, 8 Bessborough Terrace, payable out of the rents of properties, including 47 North King Street, and the lands of Broomfield, County Dublin. The agreement affirms that nothing within the said deed should interfere with the power of sale conferred upon Thomas Douglas Yourell in the will of John Yourell dated 26 July 1862. (See CA CS/2/2/4/16).
Copy deed of indenture re the ownership of premises at No. 27 Great Brunswick Street in Dublin. The deed notes that that house and premises at the address is owned by Thomas Lloyd, 14 Longwood Avenue, Dublin. The copy deed was sent to James Pearse, 27 Brunswick Street, Dublin.
Copy deeds, leases and solicitors’ correspondence relating to legal issues connected with the Father Mathew Hall property including of the purchase of the ground rent from Lord Congleton. The file includes copy correspondence from Sean Ó hUadaigh, solicitor, referring to the ‘plot of ground on which 11-15 May Lane formerly stood’ (20 Mar. 1969). Other correspondents include Montgomery and Chaytor, solicitors, 16-17 Clanwilliam Terrace, Grand Canal Quay, Dublin (relating to the title of the Merchant Tailors’ Charity to the Hall property); Frank Ward & Co., solicitors, Equity House, Upper Ormond Quay, Dublin, regarding the purchase of the freehold interest by Stephen Ducie of 1 & 1A Nicholas Avenue from the Capuchin Order (11 Apr. 1994). These copy documents were probably prepared by solicitors to clarify title in respect of the Father Mathew Hall property and adjoining cottages.
Photostat copy of a diary compiled by Fr. Timothy Connery OFM Cap. covering his experiences as a missionary in Northern Rhodesia. Periodic references are made to the extreme distances travelled between the missions and villages (‘returned by canoe down river’), and to accounts of masses said in the bush. Locations are frequently given in longitude and latitude measurements. It is noted that Fr. Timothy left Africa for Ireland on 24 June 1938 (p. 57).
Copy draft lease of Fr. Daniel Patrick O’Reilly OSFC and Fr. James Edward Tommins OSFC to Patrick Macken, grocer and wine merchant, of no. 48 North King Street, for 100 years at the yearly rent of £36. An annotation on title page reads: ‘approved of as altered on part of lessors, Terence O’Reilly, 9 Mar. 1874’.
Copy extract from a letter by Harry O’Hanrahan to his mother and sisters. The letter is in the hand of Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. He refers to his detainment in Richmond Barracks and to detectives selecting ‘out about 14 including the 2 Cosgraves, T. Mac Donagh, Kent, ourselves etc …’. He also refers to the fighting in Jacob’s Biscuit Factory.
Copy extract from the Register of Freeholders re ‘a right to pass and repass on foot and with horses or other animals … over parts of the lands of Cashelmore and Doocashel Glebe’ in County Donegal. It is noted that the Capuchin friars are the owners of these lands by a deed registered on 14 Jan. 1931.
Copy fee farm grant from Godwin Swift to Samuel Warren of a plot of ground on the west side of Cullenswood Avenue in Ranelagh, Dublin, for an annual farm rent of £100 and in consideration of 5s. The original deed is dated 18 November 1853. This copy is dated c.1908.
