A letter from Fr. T.J. Walsh, South Presbytery, George's Quay, Cork, to Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., providing information on the photographs accompanying his article on the Capuchins in Cork which he published in 'The Capuchin Annual'. Particular reference is made to images associated with Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC.

A letter from Fr. Thomas Dawson OMI (1850-1939), Oblate House of Retreat, Inchicore, Dublin, to Fr. Henry Rope. Dawson includes a description of the events of Bloody Sunday in Croke Park on 21 November 1920. He writes 'sixteen young students, from a different house, were among those who escaped when they saw the armed forces coming. As they clambered over the embankments, the bullets were hopping about them, but the only hit among our youngsters was when one of them had the top of one finger shot off'. He also refers to a raid on the Oblate house of studies (most likely Belmont House in Stillorgan) and to the rough treatment meted out by the soldiers.

Letter from Fr. Patrick Lavelle, Cong, County Mayo, to P.J. Leonard referring to support for the French military ‘in this hour of bitter trial and overwhelming disaster’. A note attached to the letter reads ‘Father Lavelle / Cong / 11 Jan. 71 / French / introducing Kelly to Bishop Dupanloup [of] Orleans / Kelly wishes to join the army’. The note is endorsed ‘7196’.

Letter from Fr. Mícheál Ó Flannagáin, The Gaelic League, 149 Broadway, New York, to Fr. Richard Henebry. Flannagáin refers to Hudson Maxim (1853-1927), an American military inventor and author.

Letter from Fr. Laurence Dowling OFM Cap., Father Mathew Hall, Church Street, Dublin, to Br. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. thanking him for his offer of Irish language material for ‘The Father Mathew Record’. Fr. Laurence wrote ‘You can write on any subject you like, and we shall rely entirely on your own good judgement. If you think some simple lessons in the Irish language would be popular, you may of course do them’.

Letter to Br. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. from Fr. Laurence Dowling OFM Cap., Parochial House in Windgap, Callan, County Kilkenny, re an article about postage stamps in aid of the foreign missions. Reference is also made to contributions to ‘The Father Mathew Record’ seemingly by Frank Ryan.

Letter from Fr. Laurence Dowling OFM Cap., Father Mathew Hall, Church Street, Dublin, to Br. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. referring to arrangements for the serial publication of ‘Scéal “Sheandúin”’ by Tadhg Ó Murchadha in ‘The Father Mathew Record’. Fr. Laurence added ‘Since I finished above, I have had a chat with a keen Irish student – Frank Ryan who is studying in Dublin for his degree in “Celtic Studies”. He is delighted you are commencing your work in Record for March. He also has promised to do something next month (February). He thinks a vocabulary would not be necessary – however just do as you think best’. Fr. Laurence also refers to Ryan’s contention that ‘all lovers of Irish will be looking forward to Seandún’s recollections’.
