Art and Artists / Bound Photographic and Document Volume

A bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘Art and Artists’. The volume contains newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence (particularly re reproductions of paintings), printed ephemera (exhibition catalogues), and photographic content relating to prominent Irish artists, and exhibitions of their work. Many of these artists were associated with Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. and ‘The Capuchin Annual’. The file also includes colour and black and white print reproductions of work by old masters and various continental artists. Includes assorted clippings and some original letters from Jack B. Yeats, and documents re Seán O’Sullivan RHA, Patrick Joseph Tuohy, James Humbert Craig, and the sculptors John Hogan, and Jerome Connor. Also includes some original letters from George Noble Plunkett (1851-1948). With a typescript list of paintings loaned by ‘The Capuchin Annual’ Office to the Tuam Art Club exhibition in 1945.

Letter from Bride Tuohy

A letter from Bride Tuohy, 4 Haddon Road, Clontarf, Dublin, to James Burke, solicitor, seeking £20 for the portrait of Frank Fahy by her brother, the painter Patrick Tuohy. The painting was later purchased by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. (Volume page 101).

A photographic print of the ‘Éire’ page from Arthur O’Murnaghan’s ‘Leabhar na hAiséirighe’ (The Book of the Resurrection). The ‘Éire’ page is dominated by the Irish word for Ireland which is superimposed over a list of alternative names for the country such as ‘Banba Inisfail’, ‘Inis-Ealga’, ‘Fodla’, ‘Scota’, ‘Ierne’, ‘Hibernia’, ‘Moira’ and ‘Iuverna’. This is surrounded by panels of Celtic filigree designs, figures of birds, a round tower, and a quotation from ‘The Vision of St. Bridget’. Reproductions of the popular ‘Éire’ page were sold to raise funds for the completion of ‘Leabhar na hAiséirighe’. (Volume page 27)

Sir John Lavery’s Funeral

A clipping of a report on the funeral of Sir John Lavery in Mount Jerome Cemetery in Dublin. One of the images shows Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. in attendance. The clipping is taken form the ‘Irish Times’ (14 January 1941). (Volume page 3).
