Letter from the Royal Insurance Office, to Margaret Pearse, Sandymount Avenue, Sandymount, Dublin, re a policy of life insurance on her late husband (James Pearse) and the amount paid to the National Bank Ltd. on his death. With two manuscript enclosures seemingly re James Pearse’s debts and his account with the National Bank (4 March 1902).

The volume contains information in respect of ticket sales and cash derived from various lectures and concert performances at Father Mathew Hall, Church Street. The Hall was regularly frequented by those interested in promoting cultural revivalist activities such as storytelling and festivals of native song and dance. The volume records that Pádraig Pearse gave a lecture in the Hall entitled ‘Education in Ancient Ireland’ on 20 Nov. 1905. On 29 Jan. 1906, the Chevalier Sheeran gave a talk on subject of the ‘alleged atrocities in the Congo Free State’. Each entry is signed by a secretary or officer of the Hall Committee. The signatories include J.W. Whitmore and J. Scanlan.

Correspondence, tender forms and certificates for repairs and alterations to the altar and other furnishings (including plumbing and the installation of lavatories) at the Church and adjoining Friary of St. Mary of the Angels, Church Street. Some of the correspondence relates to work on the altar and rails of the adjoining aisle church, the Sacred Heart Chapel, which was built in 1908-9. Letters to Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap. from grand-nephews of Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC. The file includes letters from Fr. David Mathew, Theobald Mathew KC, and Fr. Gervase Mathew OP. The letters refer to the genealogy and family history of Fr. Theobald, to temperance souvenirs and mementos of his held in Holy Trinity Church, Cork, to draft letters composed by Fr. Theobald, to a portrait photograph of Fr. Theobald taken in c.1850, and invitations to various Father Mathew Centenary celebrations in Dublin. A letter of David Mathew (22 Jan. 1929) refers to the donation of Fr. Theobald’s chalice, paten and cruets to Holy Trinity Church. They were donated by Theobald Mathew Esq., KC, Recorder of Margate. In another letter (24 Feb. 1929), Fr. Stanislaus wrote ‘We have no letters written by any relative of Father Mathew to him or about him. We have in our Archives five letters written by him to members of the Order; nine that he wrote to his brother Charles, and his will of Nov. 21, 1849. We have several letters besides signed “Theobald Mathew”, but they were written by his secretary in his name, and are not in his handwriting’. A letter from Theobald Mathew refers to vestments belonging to the Apostle of Temperance in his possession (5 July 1936). The file also includes newspaper cuttings with a photographic print of the aforementioned chalice and paten belonging to Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC which were donated to Holy Trinity Church. The photograph shows the Corpus Christi procession to the Capuchin Friary in Rochestown. This annual celebration held at the friary attracted huge crowds from both the city and county in the first two decades of the twentieth century. People travelled by train, by trap or walked to the friary from Cork city. It was the most popular event of the year at Rochestown until 1926 when the first Cork city procession was held.
