Franciscan Capuchin Mission Manual

The Franciscan Capuchin Mission Manual published at St. Mary of the Angels, Church Street, Dublin. The manual contains hymns, information on mission ceremonials, notes on the Father Mathew Total Abstinence Association, and the form of the pledge to be taken at missions given by the Capuchin friars.

Temperance Missions

Newspaper clippings assembled by Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC relating primarily to temperance missions given by the Irish Capuchin friars. A manuscript index compiled by Fr. Angelus is inserted into the front of the volume giving the title of the newspaper, the event referred to in the article, and the date. Other clippings refer to anniversary commemorations of Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC, lectures, sermons and retreats given by Fr. Angelus and other friars (some refer to the death of Michael Davitt and commemorations of the Manchester Martyrs), ordinations, the Croagh Patrick pilgrimage, the mission to Ireland of the Most Rev. Ignatius Perisco OSFC (1823-1896), the jubilee of Father Mathew Hall, Church Street, Dublin, and items of topographical and local history interest.

File of clippings relating to temperance demonstrations, parades and meetings in Dublin, Cork, Wexford, Drogheda, Galway and elsewhere (particularly involving workingmen’s’ associations and trade unions). Some of the articles also refer to the sermons preached by various Capuchin friars and to societal problems associated with intemperance. The file includes the following cuttings:

Report on Temperance Mission in Dublin

A complete copy of 'La Voce / Della Veritá', 20 July 1898. The newspaper contains an article on the work of the Total Abstinence Association in Dublin and refers to Fr. Nicholas Murphy OSFC (1849-1923). A manuscript annotation on the first page reads: ‘Very Rev. Nicholas, Definitor OSFC, Capuchin Friary, Our Lady of the Angels, Church Street, Dublin (Ireland)’.

Bound volume containing newspaper clippings covering a large temperance demonstration and parade in Dublin in October 1906. The file includes clippings from 'Sinn Féin', 'The Leader', and the 'Freeman’s Journal'. Some of the articles include illustrations of the parade route and participants. Article titles include ‘Labour and Temperance’, ‘Temperance Day in Dublin / Magnificent Demonstration’, and ‘The Father Mathew Anniversary’. A manuscript insert reciting ‘Father Mathew’s Song’ is included in the volume.

The series includes records relating to general missions, retreats and tridua given by the Capuchin friars to parishes, lay confraternities, sodalities and associations, working men’s clubs, and (particularly) religious congregations and societies. The series contains administrative records including mission lists, schedules and reports. A large assemblage of correspondence is also extant.
