Flier for ‘Easter 1916’ Play by Montagu Slater

A flier for a performance of ‘Easter 1916’, a play by Montagu Slater, an English poet and playwright. The play covers the period from the 1913 lock-out to the1916 Rising by chronicling the life of James Connolly described as ‘Ireland’s first Socialist martyr’. A performance of Slater’s play was produced by the Left Theatre Company at the La Scala Theatre in Dublin in April 1936.

‘Irish War News’ (Vol. 1, No. 1)

An original copy of ‘Irish War News’, Vol. 1, No. 1 (25 April 1916). This item was published by the republicans occupying the General Post Office in Dublin during the insurrection. Includes ‘Stop Press! The Irish Republic’ on the final page announcing the Rising. This was the only printed document issued by the Rising leaders other than the Proclamation.

Release of Female Prisoners

A clipping of short article announcing the release of several female prisoners detained after the insurrection. The prisoners included Annie Higgins, Madeline Ffrench-Mullen, and Nellie Gifford. The clipping is taken from the ‘Freeman’s Journal’ (5 June 1916).

The Dominican chapel is notable for having been built and decorated between 1947 and 1951 under a plan devised by the artist Henri Matisse (1889-1954).
