Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: memorandum (copy?) "prepared by Fr. Alphonsus and given to His Excellency Mgr. Persico, the Papal Envoy, 5 August, 1887", concerning the church, faculties and conditions under Bishop McAllister's rule.

Anthony O'Carroll, to the Provincial, Highgate, explaining why no Passionist was at the conference of the clergy (held in the Diocese?). All were occupied and he had informed the Bishop - Bishop's reply enclosed. (NB. This reply is not attached). Anthony thinks we could not agree to the Bishop's ideas and explains why. Suggests that Provincial brings a canonist with him when he meets the Bishop. Best be prepared with facts as to what our priveileges are. If any men are presented for faculties exams, they had better be good. Anthony thinks we should act now.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Copy letter from the Provincial to Bishop McAllister in reply to his letter of 13 September re Passionists attending conferences of clergy and to building of new church. Provincial mentions that Fr. Anthony's reference, at the conference dinner, to the bazaar would not have been made had Anthony been aware that such reference would have been disagreeable to the Bishop. The Provincial goes on to point out that he can't maintain a proper religious community in Ardoyne if priests are refused faculties. Regrets Bishop refers to a case where now the offender has been punished.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister:Copies of 2 letters, which, though they are included in the "Dispute" arrangement, may not be quite relevant to that heading. (1) 22.11.1887, probably to the Rector, in which the Bishop grants his consent for the giving of the Apostolic Blessing at the principal mass on Sunday 27 inst: (2) 23.11.1887 from Rector to Fr. McGaskin (the bishop's man of affairs) giving details of the "Missae Pro Populo" celebrated at Holy Cross. At Ligoneil they are said "in caritate" in accordance with our Rules and Constitutions.

He will grant faculties to Fr. Stephen when he furnishes testimonial letters required by diocesan regulations. Does not consider services of 5th priest necessary.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: What seems to be a draft of a communication from the Provincial, Fr. Vincent Grogan, to Bishop McAllister. Acknowledges letter dated 13 January and refers to his own previous letter (neither of which are to hand at time of computerisation). He wishes to reorganise Belfast Passioists as a religious community with all their rights and privileges. Enlarges on this. Deals with matters raised by the bishop concerning the new church and his apparent annoyance at remarks made by some Passionists in the matter. He also deals with the bishop's further references to an erring Passionist.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Letter from Bishop McAlister to the Provincial, Fr. Vincent Grogan in answer to his letter of 32 January (see item under serial number 1959). The privileges claimed by Vincent are those of "ORDERS". Passionists are only a congregation. By Vincent's commands the Passionists have broken diocesan regulations in claiming to be able to send as many priests as the provincial thinks fit. The Passionists came 19 years before of their own option, entered into an agreement and kept it until Vincent broke it without the consent of the other party. He mentions the scandal caused by an errant Passionist. The present disagreement has arisen from Vincent's actions so bishop refuses to accede to his demands.

Vincent Grogan's reply to Bishop McAllisiter's letter of 6 February (se item under serial number 1964). He gives notice of appeal to the Holy See. Gives 3 reasons why Passionists have privileges. All previous provincials, still living, agree with Vincent's statements. He rejects reference to scandalous behaviour (then cancels this out). Arthur Devine appends a note declaring that this is an exact copy of the letter sent to the Bishop..

Vincent Grogan, Provincial, in reply to his letter of 24 February (see copy located under serial number 1965. , Says Vincent started this row by threatening to appeal to the Holy See in his very first letter and has repeated this in every letter since. So incorrest to say that bishop obliged him to go to Holy See. Passionists came to Down and Connor of their own free will and have accepted the position for 19 years. Vincent appears blind to the intersts of the Diocese. Bishop would need authenticated certificate of Passionists having privileges of Regulars (Orders).
