A clipping of an image of a large crowd assembled on the Grand Parade in Cork city for a recruitment rally during the Great War. The image was published in the ‘Irish Life’ magazine (8 October 1915). The frontage of Alexander Grant and Co., a landmark department and clothing store, can be seen in the background of the photograph. This four-storey building at 16-18 Grand Parade (constructed in the 1860s) was destroyed by fire in March 1942. The site was later repurposed as the Capitol Cinema which opened its doors in 1947. (Volume page 201).

An image of Éamon de Valera inspecting Irish military personnel on O’Connell Street in Dublin. The parade marked the twenty fifth anniversary of the 1916 Rising and was held on 13 April 1941.

A clipping of a report on the executions in Mountjoy Jail of Edward Foley and Patrick Maher, who were convicted of having shot an RIC sergeant, Patrick Wallace, during an ambush in Knocklong in May 1919. Reference is also made to the execution of Constable William Mitchell, who was convicted of the murder of Robert Dixon, a magistrate who was killed during a robbery at his home in Dunlavin in County Wicklow. The clipping is taken from the ‘Evening Herald’ (7 June 1921).
