Mission and Retreat Lists

Lists of retreats and missions given by the Capuchin friars. The lists provide information in respect of the names of the friars giving the mission or retreat, the location (with occasional reference to the parish priest), and the date. Several lists are extant in the file. These include:
• List of temperance missions given by the Capuchin friars in the dioceses of Tuam, Raphoe, Clonfert and Elphin in 1909.
• List of retreats given by the Capuchin friars from Feb.-Aug. 1909.

Letters to Fr. Peter Bowe OSFC, Provincial Minister, regarding requests for parish missions and retreats. The file includes letters requesting missions in Sandymount (Dublin), Wicklow, Quin (Clare), Drumshanbo (Leitrim), Armagh, Drogheda (Louth), Letterkenny (Donegal), Coalisland (Tyrone), Charleville (Cork), Cappoquin (Waterford), Ardee (Louth), Cloghan (King’s County), Ballyshannon (Donegal) and Limerick. The file also includes a copy of an address titled ‘A little farewell to the Capuchin Fathers on ending their retreat in St. Michael’s Church, Kingstown [Dún Laoghaire], 14th March 1909’.

Flier and Subscription List for Fr. Michael O’Hickey Testimonial

A flier for the Fr. Michael O’Hickey Testimonial following his dismissal as Professor of Irish in St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, County Kildare. The testimonial reads ‘Dr. O’Hickey has for many years taken a leading part in the promotion of the national Language Movement, which, in the belief of men of a parties, has inspired Ireland with a new life and a new power. It is now some years since the plain-spoken and telling words of his published addresses on Irish Education laid the foundation of a great reform in the then almost hopelessly Anglicised school systems of Ireland’. The testimonial includes a lengthy list of subscribers who have contributed to the fund.

The volume includes cuttings of articles relating to local history, antiquarian interest and charity sermons and retreats given by the Irish Capuchins. The volume includes the following articles:
• Report on a sermon in Holy Trinity Church, Charlotte Quay, by the Rev. Dr. Lyster on Fr. Agathangelus and Fr. Cassian, two Capuchin martyrs. [Nov. 1905].
