The engravings were sent to individuals who agreed to act as patrons of the tower. The correspondence runs from 1846-7. The file includes letters from George Howard, Viscount Morpeth, Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne, Capt. Forbes of the 'Jamestown', Admiral Edward Codrington, Henry Pelham-Clinton, Earl of Lincoln, and Asenath Nicholson, author of 'The Bible of Ireland' (1852). A dedication on the title page reads ‘I am with high respect Dear Mr. O’Connor, your grateful and affectionate friend, Theobald Mathew, Cork, 26th November 1846’. Some of the covering envelopes are also pasted into the volume.
