The caption to the photograph notes that the building was ‘once the Mansion House’, a reference to the fact that the oldest part of the hospital was built between 1764 and 1767 and that the original building served as the official residence of the Lord Mayor of Cork until 1842.

The image shows detail from the stonework in the interior of the abbey, looking east through the choir and into the presbytery. An annotation on the reverse indicates that the photographer was T. F. Geoghegan.
