Overseas Missions: Botswana: Paraguay: Vicariate: "A Bulletin compiled by the Students of Mount Argus from letters received from the Missionaries" Part One: "A Year in Paraguay". A review, by Salvian MaGuire, C.P., of the year since the arrival of the Passionists in Paraguay is quoted, He describes the terority and population. Attendance at Mass is sparce and few receive the sacraments. Fr. Theophane writes in the same vein. The number of irregular unions is referred to. While it would seem that there is work for a legion of priests, little would be gained at present by putting more men on the job. There are 8 schools in the parish. There is a necessity for a trained catehcist. Plans for a church and oratory are in hands. Medical facilities are appaling and the water is bad. On 24 January there were 82 cadidiates for Confirmation.. Paraguay: Parish officially handed over and Fr. Salvian appointed Parish Priest on 26-07-1964. Copy of the official document of the transfer appended with the written testimony of the Chancellor of the Prefecture. Salvian wrote home for a "Parish Seal" and proper Passionist notepaper. In comparison with Bechuanaland, they are well suplied with rain..The danger from spiders and snakes is mentioned. Medical facilities are poor. Overseas Missions: Botswana: letter from Fergus Loughrey, C.P., to the Provincial enclosing a report on the situation in Bechuanaland (Botswana). This is a very comprehensive and important report, as it seems to be the basis on which the Provincial Curia decided to undertake missionary activity in that country. It covers such matters as 1950 statistics; copy of leasing agreement signed in 1941 concerning Lot B "Forsest Hill"; contract for the Mission Station, Khale Siding: missionary sisters: rainfall statistiucs: various mission stations: information on a questionnaire covering various aspects of Botswana, plus additional information: pernit for school or mission site; duiscussion with Apostolic Delegate: population: attitudes to Catholicism: Government of Bechuanaland: notes on Aostolic Delegates report: map of missions and mass places: Khale financial statistics and Khale financial surpluses 1946/50. This is the second newsletter from Botswana. It is winter and vegetation to feed the cattle is very scarce. Poverty is rampant. Children flock to the schools, but there are few traditional Catholic families. The new convent of St. Teresa's Mission, Lobatsi was opened on the feast of St. Gabriel by Monsignor Murphy. An accouint of progress in Lobatsi is given, as is that at Ramoutsa. A progress report on St. Joseph's College, Khale, and accounts concerning Morwa. Malalapye, Francistown are su[pplied. Carthage appeals to his bretehrn to send on books suitable for priestly life.

Overseas Missions: South Africa: Botswana: Oblates and Jesuits: photocopy of a document from the General Curia of the Oblates entitled "Studium", mainly in German, but with three paragraphs in English stating that the German Province will scarcely for the time being be able to supply the necessary personnel; that Govenrment officials would not like to see more German missionaries sent to the Protectorate; that the writer is considering proposing that the Botswana Protectorate be seperated from the Kimberly Vicariate, and he would be pleased if the English, Irish or American Province "of your Society" were willing to take over the Protectorate.
