Letters from Arnold Bax (1883-1953), 155 Fellows Road, London, and Grosvenor Hotel, Chester, to Fr. Michael O’Shea OFM Cap., President, Father Mathew Hall, Cork. In 1929 the Feis Maitiú Corcaigh invited Bax, a well-known composer and poet, to become an adjudicator marking the beginning of a 24-year friendship with the prestigious local music festival. Most of the correspondence relates to arrangements for the Cork Feis and other matters of musical interest. The file includes fifteen original items in Bax’s hand. With contemporary manuscript and later typescript copies of Bax’s letters. The file also includes a typescript appreciation of Arnold Bax possibly written by Fr. O’Shea. It reads ‘The way he [Bax] came to Cork was simple enough. I attribute his coming to the initiative of Frau Fleischmann in the meeting of the Feis Maitiú Committee that was considering adjudicators for the year 1929. I remember at the time that it was mentioned that Bax had rather a Celtic strain in his compositions and the he would like to come’. Assignment from Mary Deegan, Walkin Street, to Fr. Patrick Ignatius Collins OFM Cap. and Fr. Denis Thaddeus Field OFM Cap., Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny, of a dwelling house and premises situated on Walkin Street. The deed recites that Kate Horner (died 17 Aug. 1933) was possessed of premises on Walkin Street held on a monthly or weekly tenancy from the Corporation of Kilkenny. Mary Deegan, as Kate Horner’s executrix, agrees to sell the deceased’s interest in the premises subject to the payment of rent and the performance of the tenant’s obligations for £100. Minutes of board meetings of the Commissioners of Charitable Donations and Bequests regarding a deed appointing the FMC Trust to be a trustee of the property comprising of a dwelling house fronting onto Friary Street and situated at the junction with Garden Row. The property is to be vested in the FMC Trust to benefit the charitable functions of the Capuchin Order in Kilkenny.
Copy assignment by Jeremiah Easter Esq., County of Essex, Lieutenant, 23rd Regiment of Light Dragoons, to Frances and Grace Blair, Upper Berkeley Street, Dublin. The assignment recites the will made by the late James Montgomery Blair (dated 6 Nov. 1838) and the appointment of Jeremiah Easter as his sole executor (See CA KK/2/1/1/3/1). The deed assigns all the real estate and leasehold property situated in Kilkenny city formerly belonging to James Montgomery Blair and which were bequeathed to Jeremiah Easter by the aforementioned will to his daughters Frances and Grace Blair. Copy letter from the Most Rev. Herbert B. Kennedy, Dean of Christ Church, Corrig Castle, Kingstown, County Dublin, to Fr. Matthew O’Connor OFM Cap. affirming that he pays a yearly rent of £12 5s 5d for two alms houses (formerly called the ‘Munster Arms’) to the Pack Estate. The file includes a letter from Fr. Kevin Moynihan OFM Cap. stating he is ‘writing to the Rev. Mr. Kennedy saying that at present, owing to the state of affairs, we are not anxious to invest in house property. I take it that owing to the same reason that he is so anxious to part with it’ (11 Jan. 1921). Rev. Kennedy later wrote to Nicholas Shorthall, solicitor, referring to negotiations to sell the head rent on two houses on Walkin Street, which he holds from the Pack estate, and which are currently leased to the Capuchin friars. With income tax demands in respect of said properties.

Conrad O’Donovan OFM Cap., guardian, regarding an undertaking (as a condition of sale) that the directors of the New Cinema Company would not build an entrance or exit from their premises which would front onto Friary (Walkin) Street.
