1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 1896044 Caetanus Reinjders: Fr. Gaetan (Caetanus) to Fr. Bonaventure Oberst, General Consultor, Rome. Thanks for photocopy of MS of Bl. Dominic introduction to Oratorian Life of Holy Founder. Delighted for discovery of the document, especially as he is indirectly responsible for its discovery. Honoured by suggestion to come to Rome (to work?) Would like to think and pray about it, Note in English added (by Bonaventure?) saying "Told him I had only said someone should be set aside for the work".

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 1896044 Caetanus Reinjders: Fr. Gaetan (Caetanus) to Fr. Bonaventure Oberst, General Consultor, Rome. Gaetan is delighted that Ms of Dominic's preface to Oratorian "Life" exists. Asks that it be published in Acta Congregationis to show that he wants only the truth. He asks for a photocopy of Dominic's MS. He will pay the expenses. His request for publication (of reference to vision made by Dominic in his MS introduction to Oratorial Life) was granted see Acta Congregationis Vol. X111 p 19.

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 1896044 Caetanus Reinjders: Fr. Gaetan (Caetanus) to Fr. Bonaventure Oberst, General Consultor, Rome. Thanks Consultor for 8 Mass stipends. He only wishes to do God's Will as expressed by Superiors: sees no reason for return to Rome. Has made an exact study of the processes. If Mauro wants him to examine his (Mauro's) MS, he suggests it would be best given to Fr. Egidio for that purpose.

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 1896044 Caetanus Reinjders: Fr. Gaetan (Caetanus) to Fr. Bonaventure Oberst, General Consultor, Rome. Unable to understand how Fr. Mauro can't get his book published, especially since he is now Provincial. Has sent a copy of "Doctrine de Sa. Paolo de la Croix etc, and 12 pictures of Holy Founder free of charge,

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 1896044 Caetanus Reinjders, C.P

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: MS: 1896044 Caietanus Reijnders, C.P. Fr. Gaetan, C.P, , to Fr. Bonaventure Obsert, C.P., Rome: G. has no objection to any CP translating his books. into English. The "Life" (of St. Paul of the Cross) won't be out until Spring of 1936. He sends 10 copies of "Recrutement "," to Fr General. He encloses a reply for Fr Egidio, re St Paul's vision re England. G. says he will retract his views if anyone will show him any ref. by Dominic to the vision. G. then has a 'crack' at Egidio's handwriting.

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 1896044 Caetanus Reinjders, C.P:

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 1896044 Caetanus Reinjders, C.P: carbon copy (much damaged) of a letter from Bonaventure Oberst, C.P., Consultor General, Rome to Fr. Gaetan(Caetanus) Reinjders, C.P., Tirlemont, in reply to his of 10.051935 (see item under serial number 3214). Bonaventiue & General have read letter for Egidio. He doesn't think E. will answer, since C. has ignored the proofs offered. B. is convinced E. is right and C. wrong on the point of the vision. It is here that Bonaventure indicates that it was in a footnote on p 64 of his book, "S. Paul De La Croix et L'Institut des Passionistes" that Caetanus states that the vision was apocraphyl. See copy of that book under serial number 6180). He goes on to cite some proofs, particularly the .MS of the introduction to Oratorian "Life", written at Aston Hall and now in Rome. He also quotes a letter of Ambrose P. de Lisle quoting Dominic' s own remarks. He asks C. to withdraw and not compromise the good work he has done to glorify our holy Founder. (NB. In view of the state of this copy, a clearer typed copy is attached.)

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 1896044 Caetanus Reinjders, C.P;Bollandists:

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 1896044 Caetanus Reinjders, C.P: Bollandists: Fr Gaetan,CP, (Caetanus) Reijnders, C/.P. to Fr Bonaventure (Oberst), CP, Con. Gen. ) Rome. G. comments that a book on the Supernatural gifts of Holy Founder would be interesting. He has already gather material for such a book. After the "Life" he plans 4 vols. on Holy Founder's virtues. He finds it a delicate task to steer a course between Fr Egidio's 'credulity' and the Bollandists'* severity, (the latter have already criticised what he said in Oration et Ascenion Mystique). Encloses letter for Fr Egidio: will Consultor and Fr General read it, and give it to Egidio? He has sent book to Osmund (Thorpe) in Australia.

  • John van Bolland, S.J., (1596-1665), founder of the Bollandists. He was a Flemish scholar who undertook an accurate historical investigation and presentation of the lives of the saints, an area which at that time was full of legend, myth and edifying stories. He and the scholars who worked with him and after him, following the church calendar, had worked their way down to mid-October by the time of the suppression, and publish their findings in the 53 volumes of the first series of Acta Sanctorum. The work resumed after the restoration of the society with ever increasing accuracy of method. The name Bollandists is now given to the Jesuit editors of Acta Sanctorum. They never number more than half a dozen and are one of the most learned group of men. Printout from webpage on John van Bolland attached

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 18996044 Caietanus Reijnders, C.P

1741001 St. Paul of the Cross: Vision re England: 1866044 Caietanus Reijnders, C.P. MS: Fr. Gaetan, C.P, , to Fr. Bonaventure Obsert, C.P., Rome: G. refers to accounts of our HF's vision of his children in Ingleterra (England). He says this is not mentioned in the Processes. It first appears in BId Dominic's Preface to the Oratorian Life, (see 6-7 of Life of St. Paul of the Cross Vol. 1, under serial no 3388) and then in Fr Pius' Devine's "Life" (see The Life of St. Paul of the Cross by Pius Devine pp 413-414, under serial no.3391). This statement has evidently been criticized by Fr. Egidio (Postulator). G. will not retract what he has written unless proved wrong. Quotes in support of his integrity fact that USA Carmelite nuns have translated his book and that Edmund Burke has been asked by his Provincial to do likewise.
