St. Patrick's Province: Overseas (African) Missions: Novitiate: letter from Fr. Bonaventure Osbert, C.P., Consultor General, Rome to Fr. Aidrian Convery, C.P., Provincial. Whole house is novitiate, so novices can be lodged anywhere. Interested to hear of possible incursion into Arican mission-field. Apostolic Delegate's ideas have to be compared with those of Propoganda. Glad to hear Theodore Matthews willing to go with 1st band to Africa.

Overseas Missions: Vicariate: South Africa: Oblates and Jesuits: Kimberley Vicariate: Copy letter from Bishop Meysing, O.M.I., Vicariate of Kimberley, to the General of the Oblates: being his observations on the General's letter of 19/09/1949 to the Apostolic Delegate and the A. D's reply of 12/10/1949 concerning the Kimberley and Southrn part of Bechuanaland Protectorate. (Copies of the General's reply or the letter from the Aostolic Delegate that provoked it are not to hand. The Apostoloc Delegate's letter of 12/10/1949 9 is located at 8/1/1/5, serial no. 6776.) . Bishop Meysing takes issue with the apparant determination of the Apostolic Delegate to proceede with the division of the Vicariate of Kimberley within six months to the exclusion of the German Province. He suggests that the General Administration informs the Cardinal Prefect that it adheres to its decision that it is prepared to send some English-speaking missionaries to Bechuanaland next year, and in the event that the German Province is unable to send missionaries to Kimberley in the future, the General Administration will send other Irish Fathers to the Bechuanaland. That being the case, it would then consent to the seperation of the Southern Part of Bechuanaland Protectorate from the Kimberley Protectorate.

Overseas Missions; Johannesburg: letter from Bishop Hugh Boyle of Johannesburg in reply to that of 14-01-1958 from 1936078 Fergus Loughrey, C.P., (see 8-1-4-11 serial no 6823 where Fergus submits a preliminary draft of a contract). Bishop Boyle sets out the conditions for the establishment of a Passionist Retreat in the Diocese. Overseas Missions: Johannesburg: photocopy of letter from the Mission Secretary General Caspar Caulfield, C.P., to Fergus Loughrey, C.P., enclosing copy of letter from Bishop Boyle to the Cardinal Prefect of Propaganda Fidei referred to and summarised in Caspar's letter of 25-07-1958 (see 8-1-4-15 seerial no 6828). Remarks that it is evident from letter that Boyle does not wish to admit any more religious to the City of Johannesburg. Two aproaches to the matter are adverted to by him. Overseas Missions: Johannesburg: photocopy letter from Caspar Caulfield, C.P., the Missions Secretary General acknowledging letter of 14-11-1958 from Fergus Loughrey, C.P., conveying the decision of the Capitular Fathers (concerning the question of a religious house in South Africa ?): copy of which is not extant here. Caspar, at Fergus's request, advises on how to proceed in dealing with the Bishop. Our version of the proposed contract should be sent to the Bishop before he gets out his own version, and this version should be sent by Caspar to the Bishop.

The premises at Castleknock were purchased in 1834 by the Vincentians, who were at that time running a school in Usher’s Quay. They initially continued teaching in Usher’s Quay in the morning and went over to Castleknock in the afternoon, but this management of both institutions could not be carried on very long, so the Vincentians gave up the school in Usher’s Quay in 1839.

The seminary at Castleknock, for second and third level boys, was founded by the early Irish Vincentians just after they had officially joined the Congregation of the Mission. These Vincentians were Fathers James Lynch CM, Michael Burke CM, Roger Kickham CM and Thomas MacNamara CM.

Saint Vincent’s College was a Vincentian major (i.e. third level) seminary from 1835 until the purchase of Saint Joseph’s, Prospect House, Temple Road, Blackrock, in 1875 when it moved there.

It was also a minor (i.e. second level) seminary for Vincentian and also originally for Dublin Diocese students, until the Dublin Diocese moved its seminary to Holy Cross College in Clonliffe in 1859. After the move of the Diocesan seminary, Castleknock College became more lay than ecclesiastical in nature, but even with many lay pupils attending, most of them appear to have decided to join the priesthood, and most of these joined the Congregation of the Mission.

The school is still in existence as Castleknock College, but since 2006 it has only been for day pupils. It has also been a lay school since 1859 when the Diocesan seminary moved to Clonliffe. 3 September used to be the standard day to join the Vincentian Community for those starting the novitiate, as it was the start of term.
