Part of Passionists Congregation, St. Patricks Province

Overseas Missions: Johannesburg; photocopy of letter from the Secretary General for the Missions Caspar Caulfield C.P., to (?) the Cardinal Prefect of Propoganda Fidei, informing him that the Apostolic Delegate to South Africa had requested that the Province of St. Patrick permit its Missionaries to remain in the Diocese of Johannesburg at least until the end of the year. The Provincial has directed his missionaries to remain pending further instructions. The Secretary General summarises the reasons for the decision to recall the Fathers, It briefly boiled down to the fact that the Passionist have not obtained permission for a canonical foundation. The proposed acceptance of the Bechuanaland ( Botswana ) Protectorate as an independent mission make it imprudent for the Province to accept extensive parish obligations outside the boundries of the Protectorate. A Passionist centre in the Union of South Africa is of the utmost importance to the Bechuanaland Mission. A list of conditions from the Provincial relevant to the continuance of the Fathers in the Diocese is appended, THIS ITEM IS INCLUDED AT A4 OF THE DOCUMENT "OFFICIAL CORRESPONDENCE RE SETTING UP OF HOUSE IN TRANSVAAL" LOCATED AT 8-1-4-1 SERIAL NO 6821)

Overseas Missions: Vicariate: South Africa: Botswana: Oblates and Jesuits: copy letter from Bishop M.H. Lucas, Apostolic Delegate, Pretoria, to the Fr. General of the Oblates, answering the General's reply to a report from H.E., regarding the divison of the Kimberely Vicariate. (Copies of that rerporet or the General's reply are not to hand.) H.E., sets out the reasons why any division is ever necessary and answers points raised by the General: (a), he is not dissatisfied with the German missioinaries - the mission is too vast and understaffed: (b) England has not asked that the German missionaries in Bechuanaland be replaced, but the authorities would be pleased to have Englsih-speakers: (c) it is not the policy of the government to make the missionary peresonnel undesirable because they are Catholics. He would welcome the idea of the Irish Province taking over this part of the province. He also deals with the Training College in the Reserve and discusses certain rumours heard by the General. He trusts that the General will be able tio interest the Irish Province in Bechuanaland
