Teaching Notes for the History of the Bantu Religion

A collection of reading materials and teaching notes compiled by Fr. Edwin Flynn OFM Cap. for a course on the history of the Bantu religion which he taught in the University of Zambia. The file includes: letters from Dr. Vukani G. Nyirenda, University Secretary, to Fr. Edwin re his appointment as a senior lecturer in education (28 Oct. 1985); and from Dr. I.W. Chikalanga, senior lecturer, re Fr. Edwin’s employment in the School of Education (under the sponsorship of Zambian Episcopal Council) from October 1985 to October 1997.

Copy deed of conveyance from the FMC Trust, c/o Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny, to Edward and Corann Loughlin, 31 Thorndale Drive, Malahide Road, Artane, Dublin 5, of all premises and property situated at the junction of Friary Street and Garden Row with the yard at the rear thereof held in fee simple and subject to the terms and conditions as set down in the fee farm grant (29 Oct. 1898) from Penelope H. Colles and others to Fr. Matthew O’Connor OSFC and Fr. Fidelis Neary OSFC at an annual rent of £13 7s 8d. Consideration: £101,000. With draft copies, draft memorandum of agreement, draft conditions of sale and a blank memorial for registering the said deed in the Registry of Deeds.

Representations re Father Mathew Hall

Letters referring to the campaign to preserve Father Mathew Hall as a community or heritage resource. The file includes letters from Senator Dermot Fitzpatrick and An Taisce which expressed concern that the Hall ‘should be restricted to use as a public amenity for the north side of Dublin and for the city generally’.

Adjudicators’ Reports

Adjudicators’ reports for the competitions held at the Father Mathew Feis in 1998. The reports include remarks made by various adjudicators at the Feis. The reports include entries under the title of competitor’s number, competition number and the title and marks awarded. The competitions assessed include solo drama and mixed verse speaking.

Valuation Report

Valuation report by Ganly Walters Boyd, 5 William Street, Kilkenny, for garden premises on Pennyfeather Lane. The property comprises a portion of the garden attached to the Capuchin Friary. It comprises approximately 18,000 square feet in area, and at the time of inspection was laid out in level lawns and with, at one end, a handball alley and a small stand for spectators. The property is bounded to the north by the remainder of the Friary garden, to the east by a car belonging to Allied Irish Banks, to the south by an extensive development site owned by the proposed purchaser and to the west by the same development site. The property is held by the Capuchin friars under an unencumbered freehold title. With attached copy ordnance survey map.

Correspondence relating to the sale of 17 Friary Street

The letters relate to the purchase of the ground rent of a property known as ‘Morrissey’s, 17 Friary Street’, from AIB Bank by the FMC Trust for £1,000 and to the proposed purchase of the said premises by Kilkenny Corporation. Correspondents include John Lanigan & Nolan, Abbey Bridge, Dean Street, Kilkenny, Fr. Leo Cullen OFM Cap., the Town Clerk’s Office, Kilkenny Corporation, and the Charitable Commissioners Office. A letter from John Lanigan & Nolan refers to the property as being let to tenants called ‘the Floods … [comprising] two Alms Houses i.e. the old “Munster Arms” at an annual rent of £11.50 due half yearly’.

Correspondence of Feis organisers

Correspondence of Fr. Dan Joe O’Mahony OFM Cap., President, Br. Daniel O’Brien OFM Cap., Celia Hanley and Patricia Melligan, secretaries, Father Mathew Feis, mostly seeking subscriptions for corporate sponsorship and requests from teachers for poems and other Feis syllabi, and arrangements for competition adjudicators and students. The file includes a letter from Thelma Conlan, President, Speech and Drama Teachers Association, affirming that it ‘would be a great loss if a Feis of such stature was to become a thing of the past’. She suggests to Fr. Dan Joe that the ‘Association would be prepared to take over the running of this excellent Feis’; a letter from A. Ó hAonghusa, secretary to Michael D. Higgins, Minister for Arts, regretting that he cannot attend the launch of the Feis (9 Feb. 1993). With a newspaper clipping from the 'Evening Herald', 8 Feb. 1997, referring to the Feis Maitiú and the TV personalities who appeared in the Feis including Gay Byrne, Brenda Fricker, Frances Black and Hugh O’Connor.
