Assignment of a lease from Lady Elizabeth Barbara Travers

Assignment from Lady Elizabeth Barbara Travers, widow and residuary legatee of Sir William Saint Lawrence Travers, to Francis Elias MacNamara, South Terrace, Cork, of the residue of a lease dated Oct. 1781 from Benjamin Whitestone to William Clark of a cellar, yards and stores on Charlotte Quay, in consideration of £475. Endorsed on the final page with a declaration from MacNamara and Nicholas Daniel Murphy stating that the aforementioned sum of £475 was the ‘proper money’ of the Munster Bank Limited and that former was merely acting as a trustee for the said bank in the aforementioned deed of assignment. 21 Apr. 1879.

The schedule specifies that the search was for all acts by certain named persons (William Clarke, Sir William Saint Lawrence Clarke, Lady Elizabeth Barbara Clarke Travers, Francis MacNamara and Nicholas Daniel Murphy) from circa 1781-1877.

Power of Attorney by John and Elizabeth Cordner to Thomas J. White

Power of attorney by John and Elizabeth Cordner, 5 Synnot Place, Dublin, appointing Thomas J. White, 4 Usher’s Quay, solicitor, as attorney to execute a deed of assignment of their interest in the premises of 133-134 Church Street and 27 Bow street sold at auction by James H. North on 29 June 1879. With a similar deed of 2 Dec. 1880 whereby Elizabeth Corner (now of 153 Whiton Street, Jersey City), appoints Thomas J. White to act for her in all matters relating to the collection of purchase monies accruing from the said properties.

Assignment by Margaret Devlin, John Cordner and Elizabeth Cordner to Fr. Daniel Patrick O’Reilly OSFC, Fr. Joseph Martin Harkins OSFC, Fr. William Corrigan OSFC and Fr. Thomas Kavanagh OSFC of the residue of the lease (29 Oct. 1857) of nos. 133 and 134 Church Street and no. 27 Bow Street in consideration of the sum of £132. 26 Aug. 1880. A similar assignment from Elizabeth Cordner to Fr. Daniel Patrick O’Reilly OSFC and the other Capuchin friars of Church Street is appended to the deed. 31 Jan. 1881.

Legacies and Bequests

This sub-series contains wills, executors’ accounts, solicitors’ correspondence and related legal documents re legacies, bequests, and other forms of donations to the Capuchin community in Kilkenny. The material is arranged chronologically. The Mass Intentions’ Ledger Book at CA KK/1/1/3/5 contains a list of mass bequests from c.1930-60.

Later Temperance Associations

This series includes material relating to the promotion of total abstinence by organisations which emerged in response to the late nineteenth century temperance revival. The files comprise material from both local and national organisations such as the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association (PTAA) founded in 1893. The section also includes minute books, fliers, publications and ephemera created by Capuchin-founded local temperance societies such as the League of the Sacred Thirst (established by Fr. Albert Mitchell OSFC in 1880) and the League of the Young Irish Crusaders (initiated by Fr. Aloysius Travers OSFC in 1909). Much of the publicity and commemorative material generated by these abstinent societies focused on Fr. Mathew’s legacy as a temperance pioneer and leader.

Fr. Joseph Harkins OSFC (1853-1888)

Two plates showing portraits of Fr. Joseph Harkins OSFC (1853-1888). This Kilkenny-born friar traveled to India in about 1884 and took charge of a mission in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. He died in Meerut on 1 December 1888. The larger plate (10.5 cm x 8 cm) appears to a photographic print of a portrait painting. With an annotated cover.
