Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. The following items are mentioned in the report: Fr. Tuohy to obtain report on Letchford. Doody wrote a letter to The Irish Times “with reference to the Government obtaining a mandate declaring war.” Brannigan won his appeal against expulsion from the Union and is likely to be elected General Secretary of the Seamen’s Union. His lack of training as a seaman was mentioned.

Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. The following items are mentioned in the report: a full report was received on Ambrose Collins from Fr. Hegarty, Francis Street. Eamon Dillon is not living in Dundrum but may be in Bird Avenue. Sean and Lilly O’Rourke sell Communist literature. Anthony Farrington is a member of the Nuclear Committee. Msgr. O’Halloran to speak to Fr. O’Connell regarding the Lord Mayor presiding at a Nuclear Re-Armament meeting due to the personnel. Fr. Kent said he heard that the Communists were contacting people outside the Juvenile court.

Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. The following items are mentioned in the report: T. Graham, K. Nolan and C. Clarke of The Plough to be investigated. A full report on the Czech/motor trade for next meeting. A discussion on the International soccer match between Czecho-Slovakia and the Irish Republic was held. Felt Irish public should be educated in implications of such fixtures with Communist-dominated states. Suggested this could be done by an article in the newspapers facts should first be ascertained, maybe from Douglas Hyde. Letter in The Irish Times concerning the proposal of having US bases in Ireland. Fr. Tuohy to find out if de Courcey Ireland was leaving for Australia. Could Australian Authorities be warned?

Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. The following items are mentioned in the report: enquiries to be made as to whom Mrs Hilda Tweedy is. Andy Barr is active in Dublin Trade Union circles. Further enquiries regarding his affiliation being pursued. Enquiries to take place on Mrs Ester Bishop. She is on the committee of the Irish Countrywomens’ Association. A report from the German Ambassador shows that FREIHEITSSCHUTZ is not anti-Catholic and does not exist in Ireland. The Irish Times report is wrong. Volunteer Labour Service: Fr. Kent produced a cutting from The Evening Press headed “Foreign Youth in Irish Camps” young Irish people will also work in foreign countries. Fr. Crean to look into this.

Typed letter to + McQuaid. The Committee feel that more work would be done if member specialized. It was suggested and agreed that there should be two Committees, A and B. Committee A to include Msgr. O’Halloran, Fr. Crean (Communism), Fr. Kent (Trade Unions), Fr. Tuohy (University) and Fr. McMahon. Committee B to include Mgr. O’Halloran, Fr. Clarke (newspapers and periodicals), Fr. Fehily (radio and TV) and Fr. McMahon. Note in + McQuaid’s handwriting says “Very well: if it works”.

Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. The Committee would continue to meet together but members would have special responsibilities – Fr. Clarke (newspapers), Fr. Kavanagh and Fr. Kent (Trade Unions), Fr. Fehily (Radio and TV). Discussions on the Irish Students’ Anti-Nuclear Campaign, the Irish Students’ Union and the influence of Secular opinion on the ICTU were discussed.

The following items are mentioned in the report: UCD students are members of USI which was disaffiliated from the Communist dominated IUS and is now affiliated to COSEC. It has no political or Communist connections. Information on the reported Youth Section of the Irish Workers’ League was requested. A Welfare Association for newsboys has been founded by Jerry Kerrigan, a Catholic. Two reports on radio and TV personnel. Non-Catholics have a big hold in both. Butter to Russia: is it wrong to trade with Communist countries?
