Typed report on CPI and KO activities. The following items are mentioned in the report: Mick McCarthy’s criticism of William Norton, Minister for Industry and Commerce, for visiting America and attempting to get American industries located here. He called for the nationalization of Irish banks. He said that Russian children were better off than Irish children regarding social security and education. He went on to say that prices of essential goods should be controlled and that differential rents be stabilized. The special Larkin anniversary (9th) meeting was held on the 30th January. Joe Deasy gave a talk on Larkin, episodes from recordings of plays, poems and recordings were listened to.

Typed report on the Left-Wing Labour group, of which Patrick Gibbons is also a member. He was an active Communist 20 years ago. Some members who were expelled from the Dun Laoire Branch of the Labour Party are involved in the group. The group is to work secretly to create such a position within the Labour Party that would force Mr. William Norton, Minister for Industry and Commerce, to resign.

Typed report on CPI and KO activities. George Jeffares gave a lecture on “The Crisis of Imperialism”, arguing that Imperialism symbolized aggression and injustice to weaker peoples. He quoted the present situation in Cyprus. He said that the Americans were furthering the cause of Imperialism by giving help to the British Empire and that the only answer to Imperialism is the policy of the USSR. The members of the IWL were urged to press for wage increases at Trade Union meetings. The Left-Wing group decided at a meeting to publish a circular setting out the 12 points in the Labour Party programme and how these points have been neglected.

Typed report on CPI and KO activities. The meeting on the 27th March expressed concern with the likelihood of redundancy and unemployment due to the economic situation. On the 29th March Carmody gave the third of his lectures on Sean O’Casey. Two members of IWL took part in the Easter Commemoration parade at Glasnevin Cemetery

Typed report on CPI and KO activities. The meeting of 3 March discussed the anti-Stalin attitude which was causing perplexity to the League Executive in their effort to get members to fall into line with the official Communist attitude as directed from London. John Nolan remarked that it was unfortunate that members “should fail to subject their own individual ideas to the common welfare and the consolidation of Communism as a whole.” Mention of the Katyn Forest massacre was made. There was talk of expelling a few prominent trouble- makers. A discussion on international affairs mentioned the imprisonment of Archbishop Makarios.

Typed report on CPI and KO activities. The following items are mentioned in the report: O’Riordan gave a verbal report on the proceedings of the 24th Congress of the British CP at the Executive Meeting, 17th April. The question of procuring films of general Soviet interest was discussed. The vexed question of the new anti-Stalin line of thought again arose. No expulsions were necessary as pro-Stalinists were gradually coming around to the new line of thought. The speech of A. T. Mikoyan, a member of the Praesidium of the Central Committee, titled ‘The Possibility of Peaceful Socialist Revolution in Individual Countries’ was discussed.

Typed report on CPI and KO activities. The meeting of the 5th June discussed setting up a library of Marxist and other progressive books. On 6th June M. O’Riordan, S. Nolan and G. Jeffares held a meeting at Elvery’s Corner, Middle Abbey Street, on the subject of housing. About 30 people attended. No enthusiasm apparent. The meeting of 7th June discussed ways to improve the make-up of The Irish Workers’ Voice. The Chinese Committee of Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries invited about eight people to tour China, all expenses paid.

The formation of Cadres or Cells and improving the quality of the League’s membership, methods of recruiting and the future of The Workers’ Voice were discussed. In Communist countries the effect of automation has raised the standard of living in Ireland automation could lead to unemployment and misery. The cultural tour to China is being organized by George Jeffares. Those travelling include the actors Lennox Robinson and Anew McMaster.

Typed report on CPI and KO activities. The riots at Poznam in Poland, was the main discussion point at the meeting held on the 3rd July. Mick O’Riordan suggested that letters should be written to the newspapers to counteract the unfavourable publicity, saying that “the riots were grossly exaggerated”. Sam Nolan disagreed as such letters would keep the riots in the public mind. It was agreed to shelve the question until a pamphlet from the British Communist Party was published. Other topics discussed were the alterations to No. 37 Pembroke Road, a reading programme, and Robinson’s departure to China. The question, ‘Is the time right for Communism?’ was posed.

Typed report on CPI and KO activities (two copies). John Nolan was to report on the Executive Committee meeting in London but failed to turn up. On 18th July Nolan met four members at New Books, 16a Pearse Street, and told them that the London conference did not have a satisfactory outcome. On the 19th July Nolan gave a talk on ‘Emigration, a National Crisis’. Capitalism had failed the census returns showed a decline in the population agricultural production and manufacturing industries are less than half developed 60,000 unemployed. He referred to a series of lectures under the patronage of Dr. McQuaid titled ‘The Answer to Communism’.
