Membership Certificate, Wolfe Tone and Ninety Eight Memorial Association

A membership certificate for the ‘Wolfe Tone and Ninety Eight Memorial Association’. The document presents four scenes broadly connected with the 1798 rebellion with titles: ‘Cave Hill Compact, June 11th, 1795; Dublin, 23rd July, 1803; French Landing at Killala, August 22nd 1798; Foundation stone, National Memorial, S. Green Dublin, laid August 15th 1898’.

A bound volume with a manuscript title on the spine which reads ‘Irish history’. The content of the volume is extremely varied and includes newspaper clippings, photographs, printed fliers, and original ephemera relating primarily to the Irish Revolution. The volume is not paginated. The volume includes the following:

• Original postcard prints of many of the 1916 Rising leaders.
• Memorial cards for Terence MacSwiney and Cathal Brugha.
• Photographic prints of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa’s funeral.
• Photographic print of the deceased Thomas Ashe.
• Postcard print titled ‘Dr Kathleen Lynn and the ‘Republican Triplets’
• Irish Volunteer photographs.
• Original photographs relating to the War of Independence, released prisoners, invitation cards and ephemera re the first Dáil meeting in January 1919.
• Numerous photographic prints of the commemoration on O’Connell Street of the 1916 Rising anniversary in 1941 (the prints were published in the 1942 edition of ‘The Capuchin Annual’),

A copy print of an engraving of Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan (c.1655-1693), an Irish Jacobite soldier. The source of the original print is not given but it likely dates to the mid-eighteenth century. A note states that the likeness of Sarsfield is derived from the ‘original picture in the possession of Sir Charles Bingham Bart. of Castlebar in the County of Mayo, in the Kingdom of Ireland’.

A manuscript caption on the reverse of the print reads ‘Rebel garrison surrenders / Four Courts in flames after great explosion / the Four Courts, the republican fortress in Dublin, unconditionally surrendered to the Free State troops yesterday, and the garrison of about 150 are now in Mountjoy Prison / Photograph shows a fire engine at work’.
