Hand-drawn map of Irish Capuchin missions in the suburbs around Cape Town, South Africa. The map shows the locations of Claremont, Parow, and Athlone in addition to other major settlements around the Cape Flats and on the Cape Peninsula. The map has been extensively annotated. It reads: ‘The purely white parishes would be Sea Point, Rondebosch, Mowbray, Woodstock (mostly so). The other places have a quota of whites, mostly coloured though. My ambition is to get ourselves quartered in the part marked in heavy read. … All the coloured are moving towards the Flats especially along the main road towards Bellville’.

Fragmentary map of Cape Government Railways / The Royal Mail Route to the Orange River Colony, Transvaal, and Rhodesia. The map was printed by McCorquodale Ltd., Map Engravers, London. The map shows the principal railways in British possessions in Southern Africa including the Cape Colony, the Orange River Colony, Natal, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) to the borders of Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). The territory is bordered to the north by ‘Portuguese possessions’ (Mozambique). A list of places mentioned on the map is included. Several ink-stamps of the ‘Vicariate, Eastern District, Cape of Good Hope’ are extant on the map.

Map of the Cape Province, South Africa, by the Roads Branch, Cape Provincial Administration. With mileage table in both Afrikaans and English. Manuscript additions to the map (in pencil) roughly indicate the location of the Irish Capuchin churches in the Cape Province: Langa, Athlone, Parow, the Welcome Estate and Matroosfontein. A distinction is made between locations with both churches and mission schools and areas where only a school is present. A manuscript stamp indicates that the map was sent to Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, St. Bonaventure’s Friary, Cork.

This series includes records relating to Irish Capuchin missionary work in Zambia (previously Northern Rhodesia) which commenced in 1931. The series contains correspondence, visitation reports, minutes, newsletters and missionary magazines, travelogues, linguistic material, regional histories, and personal mission journals. The collection also includes a very large collection of photographic albums and prints. The papers are a rich source for church and mission history. As the work of the missionaries in Zambia embraced not just evangelism, but also, for example, education, medical work, language study and translations, and the development of local agriculture and industry, these records are a valuable source for study across a wide range of research interests.

Memorandum by Monsignor Bruno Wolnik SJ (1882-1960), Prefect Apostolic of Broken Hill, re the establishment of the Irish Capuchin mission in Barotseland. He writes: ‘As soon as a piece of land is chosen and granted by the Paramount chief, settle there and start a few temporary buildings’.

Report compiled by Fr. Edwin Flynn OFM Cap. and Fr. Donatus McNamara OFM Cap. investigating the work being done by Irish Capuchins and lay missionary workers in the Diocese of Livingstone (particularly in the fields of education and medicine). The report was prepared for Fr. Berard Creed OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, and is divided into the following sections: ‘A brief history of the diocese, education, medicine, leper settlements, agriculture, credit unions, homecrafts, women’s clubs, youth clubs, the handicapped, radio and cultural research, miscellaneous projects. Two appendices are extant: a map of the diocese and the distances between mission stations.

The appendices specify the parishes, foundations and properties belonging to and administered by the Order in Zambia.
