Minute Book of the House Council

The minutes start with the first council meeting held at Saint Joseph's, Blackrock, on 19 September 1873. At this first meeting, it was decided what the order of day would be from 4am rising to 9pm lights extinguished. The order of day was to change more than once in future meetings. Many other things were also proposed and decided in meetings.

Instructions regarding a lease of premises on Bow Street

Solicitor’s instructions regarding a lease by Moore Ferrall to the Capuchins of two houses on Bow Street, for 99 years at the yearly rent of £19. The note refers to Mrs Magrane who has agreed to her sell her interest in the said properties to the friars for £150. She has also agreed ‘to give immediate possession [of] these premises adjoining the new church on the west side facing Bow Street [where] the priests intend to build a college on the plot when in their possession’.

Some of the manuscript notes are extant on the reverse of previous correspondence or on printed material including a flier from Samuel Haughton, Secretary of the Royal Zoological Society, Phoenix Park, Dublin (February 1874), and a testimonial in favour of Philip Callan MP (1837-1902) dated 22 January 1884. Other re-used papers refer to ‘St. Vincent’s Lunatic Asylum’ (24 July 1877) and ‘M.E. Matthews, Court Dress Maker, Milliner & Florist, 49 Upper Sackville Street, Dublin’. (October 1874).
