Volume containing notes on the history and records of the Capuchin community, Holy Trinity Friary, Cork. The front cover is annotated: ‘Cork OFM Cap. Archives, July 1954’. The volume was probably begun by Fr. Michael O’Shea OFM Cap. (1892-1958) in June 1954. The title page reads: ‘Archives of Holy Trinity, Fr. Mathew Quay, Cork. Very Rev. Fr. Mel Farrell, guardian (1952)’. An annotation on the inside front cover indicates that some of the contents of the volume were extracted from archives extant in a safe in the Friary called the ‘Stairchiste’. The volume is divided into a number of sections. The listing below follows the sequence of entries as found in the volume:

The file contains the following edition of this local newspaper: 23 Oct. 1948 (Vol. 55, No. 43). The edition carries reports on the celebrations of the tercentenary of the arrival of the Capuchin Order in Kilkenny including a sermon preached by Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap. on the history of the Capuchins in the city. The celebrations were attended by the Most Rev. Patrick Collier, Bishop of Ossory, Fr. Bonaventure McCafferty OFM Cap., Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap., F.J. McGeary, editor of the Irish Independent and Mr. T.F. De Loughrey, Mayor of Kilkenny.

Notes compiled by John O’Connell (1843-1905), a grandson of Daniel O’Connell, ‘The Liberator’. The book contains accounts of various Provincial Chapters of the Capuchin Order in Ireland, records of personnel changes in various Capuchin communities, and notes on meetings and other activities of the Third Order of St. Francis in Kilkenny. Records include membership and ordination lists. Newspaper cuttings are pasted into the volume. A photographic print of the Capuchin Friary at Rochestown in also extant in the volume. A list is given on page 21 of ‘students who left the convent in Kilkenny … for Church Street, Dublin, about the ninth of April 1900, received the tonsure and minor orders on Saturday, 22nd September 1900’. The list includes the names of Brothers Sylvester Mulligan, Angelus Healy, Stanislaus Kavanagh and Albert Bibby’.

This series contains unpublished research notes compiled mainly by Capuchin friars, particularly Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap. (1875-1953), relating to the history of the Capuchin Order in Kilkenny or to noteworthy local members of the Order.

Letter from Fr. Laurence O’Dea OSFC to Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC regarding a story told to him by the Most Rev. Thomas Francis Hendricken (1827-1886), Bishop of Providence, Rhode Island, during a visit to Kilkenny in c.1873. The story concerns a false accusation made against a priest by a young woman in the early 1830s. Fr. O’Dea also referred to his temperance ministry in India where the 2nd Battalion of the 18th Royal Irish Regiment were quartered. With a typescript note by Fr. Angelus.

Letters from Mrs Poer Shee [var. Power Shee], Kilmacthomas, County Waterford, to Fr. Paul Neary OSFC, Vicar Provincial, regarding negotiations for the handing over of the Archer Chalice to the Capuchins in Kilkenny. The chalice was originally presented by Walter Archer to the Chapel of the Blessed Mary in the Monastery of St. Francis in Kilkenny in 1606. Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC wrote to Fr. Paul explaining that Miss Poer Shee ‘will hand over the chalice to us in Kilkenny to be held until the Franciscans would get a foundation there, when she would wish it to go there (as being more in accordance with its origins) … . She gives the chalice quite freely and generously’. It is unclear from the correspondence if the agreement handing over the chalice to the Capuchins was ever fulfilled. With a sketch of the chalice. The file also includes a letter from [J.S. Gill], St. Mary’s, Lanark, Scotland, to Fr. Angelus regarding an ‘OFM Chalice’ with a Kilkenny connection dating to 1632 (the letter is dated 20 Feb. 1936), and a clipping from 'The Father Mathew Record', Vol. 39, No. 6 (June 1945) of an article titled ‘The Story of a Chalice’ by Colin Johnston Cobb. The said chalice is inscribed ‘CAPVCINORUM LOCI KILKENIAE’. See also CA KK/8/15.

Notebook compiled by Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC detailing the missions and retreats given by him and other Capuchin friars from c.1903-08. The opening page notes that he was ordained on 23 Feb. 1902. An index is extant at the start of the volume. Information is given in respect of the location of the retreat or mission, the date, and the number of confessions heard and sermons preached. Occasional reference is made the subject of sermons and lectures such as ‘charity’, ‘the mercy of God’, and the 'dangers of drink’. The file also includes a separate typescript listing of missions, retreats and special sermons given by Fr. Angelus from 1903-40.

Listing compiled by Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC of the dates of temperance missions and the numbers taking the pledge in various parishes including Ballinrobe, Westport, Louisburgh, Clare Island, Clonmel and Kells. Remarks are also included in relation to the existence of a temperance hall and the names of the Capuchin friars involved in the mission.

Record book chronicling the work of the National Temperance Crusade undertaken by the Capuchin friars at the request of the Irish Catholic bishops. The volume contains brief accounts of the various missions and the numbers who took the pledge in the various dioceses. The volume is paginated, and the information is arranged alphabetically by diocese name. It appears that the volume was left unused as a large portion of the content is left blank. A two-page manuscript insert by Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC refers to the origins of the temperance crusade and to the request from the Catholic bishops to the Irish Capuchins to formally begin their temperance missions in October 1905.
