Anthony has read to the Community, Wilfred's letter re settlement of the church problem. (This letter seems to have been good news However, as the letter was not extant at time of computerisation of this archive, details of it are not known). Encloses copy of Bro. Edward's Questing letter ( copy not to hand either at time of computerisation)..

Has just told Fr Arthur re conference with Card Simeone. Thinks that Provincial should accept Cardinal's solution. If Fr Anthony comes to London for dedication of new church, a formula could be worked out embodying the two CP conditions, this then could go to Vice General for aspproval.

Holy Cross Retreat: Ardoyne; Belfast: Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Letter from Consultor General, Thomas, Rome,to Arthur Devine:He writes about Fr. Edmund's faculties and enquires if Arthur knows anything abour Fr. Bede, a Canon Regular, who has requested faculties to bless Passionist Chaplet and Scapulars. Refers to Tablet review of Arthurt;s "Convent Life". Suggests that Arthur prepare a 2nd edition for the USA and also arrange for the publication of some of Blessed Dominic's writings..
Concerning Ardoyne, Thomas has seen (keep this under your hat) the Bishop's letter to Propaganda. He wants to build a church on the C.P. site. Cardinal, after some explanation, said that according to the new Bull, Romani Pontifices, the church would be our property, if built with the money of our Congregation, but, if built with the oblations of the faithful, it would belong to the Diocese, unless Bishop gives title to us. The letter contains some conditions, which if conceeded by the BIshop, would secure for us all we wanted.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne: Belfast,: a report to the Provincial, Fr. Alphonsus O'Neill on Fr. Raphael's agreement of 25 September, 1868 - five heads of agreement. Reporter also quotes from Administration Year that the date of the arrival of the Passionists in Belfast was 3 August, 1868. [N.B. This particular item is attached to a later item, which quotes from it.]

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: memorandum (copy?) "prepared by Fr. Alphonsus and given to His Excellency Mgr. Persico, the Papal Envoy, 5 August, 1887", concerning the church, faculties and conditions under Bishop McAllister's rule.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Copy (draft) letter from Provincial to Bishop McAllister (has a note, "changed a little by Provincial and sent on 20 June). Refers to wish of Sacred Congregation that parties meet and settle matter amicably. Says he mentioned all the restrictions to the Sacred Congregation and that he wishes them all to be matters for settlement so as to avoid future rows. Would like a personal meeting. He would like any arrangement come to to be in writing. He would also like the two men recently ordained by the bishop to have faculties so as to be available for missions. He, therefore, formally presents Frs. Kevin and Ambrose.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: What seems to be a draft of a communication from the Provincial, Fr. Vincent Grogan, to Bishop McAllister. Acknowledges letter dated 13 January and refers to his own previous letter (neither of which are to hand at time of computerisation). He wishes to reorganise Belfast Passioists as a religious community with all their rights and privileges. Enlarges on this. Deals with matters raised by the bishop concerning the new church and his apparent annoyance at remarks made by some Passionists in the matter. He also deals with the bishop's further references to an erring Passionist.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Copy of answer from Sacred Congregation of Propaganda, Rome, to Bishop McAllister. Says it
was necessary for them to consult with Passionists. This being done, they now suggest that the bishop build the church with the assistance of the rector, ownership of the church to belong to the diocese, use of it to belong to the Passionists as long as they are there; with all the details of the Constitution Romanus Pontifices being observed. The bishop to decide on the site, but congregation suggests the one near the retreat becuse of easier access, the fact that the Passioinist are donating the site and helping with the building. Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Copy letter from Arthur Devine to the Consultor General, Thomas, Rome. Thinks ruling re faculties from Propaganda (referred to by Thoms in his letter of 14inst - see item located under serial number 1981)) is mistaken and quotes from an approved author to back him up. Is his interpretation wrong? He needs to know as it is important for him and his students. English, Scots and most of Irish bishops think what Arthur thinks. He would like a copy of the ruling which was given to the Dominicans in this metter, as he is making a file on this case.
