The notes in this entry concern mainly the early families on the property.

St. Joseph's Retreat, Cloonamahon: Collooney: copy letter from Owen Meredith Tweedy, St. Ermins, Westminister to Fr. Stephen Lavery, C.P. The family is agreeable to present the old bowl (now used as a holy water stoop in the octagonal church) to the monastery. Family tradition is that it was found under a big tree (now Bishop Harte's ash) which stood in front of the farmhouse door (see item under serial number 8138 in Photographic Archive for photograph of that tree). The bowl was treasured by the family because of its alleged connection with the old pre-reformation monastery at Cloonamahon.

Valentine, C.P., (at St. Mungo's Retreat, Glasgow) to the rector of Cloonamahon, Fr, Salvian, C.P., regarding the answers given to him (Salvian) by Fr. Cyprian on the canon law requirements of the proposed new public oratory at St. Joseph's following questions raised by Salvian in the matter (see item under serial number 8726). The position is even less satisfactory than he (Valentine) had thought. The agreement with the previous bishop of the diocese has ceded our right to a public church, questing, etc., even to have more than one Mass for the faithful on Sundays. Valentine asks, "What future is there for Cloonamahon?". In consulting the community on the future of Cloonamahon, they should be fully informed as to all that is involved and they should be given the opportunity of examining carefully our contract with the late bishop.
