Memorandum regarding properties held by the Irish Capuchins

Memorandum possibly compiled by Fr. Thomas Dowling OSFC, Provincial Minister, listing ‘properties which were purchased or exchanged by the superiors of the Province from time to time’. The schedule refers to transactions involving properties and lands held in Dublin, Kilkenny, Cork city and Rochestown. The Cork section refers to the ‘purchase of stores etc. at [the] sanctuary-end of Father Mathew Memorial Church, and the exchange of part of the same for the property upon which the new extension of [the] sanctuary is built …’. It is noted that the ‘annual rent of the Cork church house and garden etc. is about £160’.

Letters from James Finbarre McMullen (1859-1933), architect, South Mall, and 34 Mary Street, Cork, and others to Fr. Bernard Jennings OSFC, Fr. Fiacre Brophy OSFC, Fr. Matthew O’Connor OSFC and Fr. This section includes records relating to the construction and repair history of buildings held by the Capuchin Franciscans in Cork. The sub-series includes specifications for buildings, correspondence, bills of costs for construction, property upkeep and improvement, and contracts for repair and servicing.

Articles of contract for construction of High Altar

Articles of contract of Fr. Cherubini Mazzini OSFC, Queen Street, with Joseph O’Reilly, 4 Anglesea Street, Cork, sculptor, for the work on the High Altar to be erected in Holy Trinity Church, Charlotte Quay, Cork. The contract refers to certain stipulations and conditions including the superintendence of Fr. Caesar Pascal OSFC over the work. The specification for the work is annexed to the contract which is to be completed for the total cost of £169. The specification outlines the design, ornamentation and materials to be used in the construction of the new altar. It also includes two small line drawings of the finials, designed by P.J. Scannell, 14 Douglas Street, which will support some of the statutes surrounding the altar.

Letter of contract by John Delany to Fr. Simeon Gaudillot OSFC (1836-1910), Commissary General, undertaking ‘to build the front wing of the Capuchin Convent, the ambulatory and the boundary wall according to the plans and specification proposed by Mr. Robert Walker, architect’. With a similar copy contract on the reverse in respect of the library wing of the said building.
