Michael J. Lennon Recollections of the 1916 Rising / Bound Document Volume

A bound volume containing clippings of articles chronicling the 1916 Rising by Michael J. Lennon (1891-1966). The articles were published in serial form in the ‘Irish Times’ from 1948-9. The articles appeared under the titles ‘Easter Week Diary I-VI’ (29 March-3 April 1948), and ‘The Easter Rising from the Inside I-VI’ (18-23 April 1949).

1916 Rising / Civil War / Bound Document Volume

A bound book, formerly ‘The Works of Ruskin / library edition / Vol. II’, in which clippings relating to the 1916 Rising taken from contemporary newspapers have been laid in. The clippings (including many printed photographs and illustrations) cover the fighting and the subsequent executions of the rebel leaders. The volume includes contemporary accounts mainly taken from loyalist publications, including the ‘Irish Times’, ‘Daily Sketch’ and ‘Weekly Dispatch’. The volume also includes articles from the ‘Cork Free Press’. The end pages of the volume contain clippings relating to the Civil War and material re the deaths and executions of leading republicans during the latter stages of that conflict. A few articles from the late 1930s and early 1940s (presumably compiled by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap.) are also extant in the volume. Inserts include typescript ephemera mainly from anti-Treaty and republican sources during the Civil War. The volume is not paginated.

Art and Artists / Bound Photographic and Document Volume

A bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘Art and Artists’. The volume contains newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence (particularly re reproductions of paintings), printed ephemera (exhibition catalogues), and photographic content relating to prominent Irish artists, and exhibitions of their work. Many of these artists were associated with Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. and ‘The Capuchin Annual’. The file also includes colour and black and white print reproductions of work by old masters and various continental artists. Includes assorted clippings and some original letters from Jack B. Yeats, and documents re Seán O’Sullivan RHA, Patrick Joseph Tuohy, James Humbert Craig, and the sculptors John Hogan, and Jerome Connor. Also includes some original letters from George Noble Plunkett (1851-1948). With a typescript list of paintings loaned by ‘The Capuchin Annual’ Office to the Tuam Art Club exhibition in 1945.

Archbishop Richard Cushing’s Pilgrimage to Ireland / Bound Photographic and Document Volume

A bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘cuttings’. The volume contains newspaper and magazine clippings reflecting a wide range of literary and religious subjects. The volume includes several obituaries for prominent Irish emigrants (both religious and lay) in North America. The file also includes original photographs and ephemera relating to a pilgrimage to Ireland organised by Richard Cushing (1895-1970), Archbishop of Boston, in 1949. The photographs show Archbishop Cushing meeting various political and religious figures, including President Seán T. O’Kelly, Taoiseach John A. Costello, Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, Archbishop John D’Alton, Paul A. Dever (Governor of Massachusetts), and the Capuchin friars, Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., and Fr. Henry Anglin OFM Cap. Typescript documents and ephemera are also extant in the volume, including material sourced from ‘The Advocate’ (Melbourne, Australia), and ‘The Father Mathew Record’.

Letters from solicitors T F O'Connell, Rooney & Company regarding a trust deed of new trustees, and work to be done identifying people involved in the holding of land in different legal documents. A list of such legal documents is included. A selection of names mentioned are: Reverend Thomas Robert Burrowes and his wife; Edward Caulfield; Sidney R Burrowes; Mrs J B Burrowes; Ellershaw and the Vincentians themselves.

One of the letters has a list of leases, detailing the names of lessors and lessee, as well as the dates of the leases. The names are Burroughes [Burrowes]; Fitzmaurice; Pilsworth; Father Malachy O'Callaghan CM; Doyle; Malone; and Byrne.
