African Mission Album of Fr. Jarlath Gough OFM Cap.

The album contains un-captioned photographic prints relating to Fr. Jarlath Gough’s time as a missionary in South Africa and later, on the island of St. Helena. Includes numerous photographs of Mass and sodality groups associated with Capuchin missionary work in South Africa. The album includes some views of local worship including communion groups, religious pageants and retreats, and photographs of religious sisters and various clerics. Some personal, family and travel prints are also extant in the album including images of ships docked in the Port of Cape Town, a pilgrimage to Lourdes in France, and a trip to Croke Park in Dublin.

Photographic album of Fr. Jarlath Gough OFM Cap. (1902-1983). The album contains partially-captioned black and white prints mainly relating to Fr. Jarlath’s time as a missionary in Africa. Some personal, family and travel prints are also extant. The captioned photographs include:

African Mission Album of Fr. Alfred O’Mahony OFM Cap.

A small album containing photographic negative sheets compiled by Fr. Alfred O’Mahony OFM Cap. (1912-1988) mostly relating to the work of Irish Capuchin missionaries in Africa. An annotation on the inside cover reads: ‘Fr. Alfred O’Mahony / Sancta Maria / Mongu / Northern Rhodesia’. The album has a manuscript index to the contents. The album includes images of baptisms, school groups, religious sisters in Lukulu, Sichili, Livingstone and Sawmils in Northern Rhodesia, and in Langa, Athlone and Parow in Cape Town, South Africa. Images of Victoria Falls (1942) and the Zambezi River are also extant in the file. There are also prints of groups of friars in Rochestown College, County Cork (1931-2), and in Knock, County Mayo (1940).

Photographic album of Fr. Albert Hayes OFM Cap. (1915-2005). The album contains un-captioned black and white photographic prints. Fr. Albert was resident in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) from 1945-67. The volume contains captioned prints relating to Fr. Albert’s ministry in the country including:

African Adventure

Publication by Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap. on the Irish Capuchin mission in Barotseland, Northern Rhodesia. Published by 'The Father Mathew Record' Office, Dublin. The book summarizes Fr. O’Mahony’s experiences during a visitation to the Cape Province (South Africa) and to Northern Rhodesia in 1935. The chapter headings are: A new venture; the missionary idea; mysterious Africa; gateway of the Cape; from the Cape to Livingstone; the Barotse people; exploring; to Mongu; the religious of the Barotse.

Afforestation Scheme

File of documents (mainly from the County Donegal Committee of Agriculture) re a scheme to encourage landholders to plant trees on their lands in the county. The file includes information sheets and blank application forms relating to the proposal to plant conifers for a ‘shelter belt scheme in arable fields which cannot be cultivated in the usual way, on steep banks or hillsides, rocky or broken ground practically bare of vegetation, … and in swamps and bogs which cannot be reclaimed for agricultural purposes’. The file also includes a letter from A.M.S. Hanan re an article for the Royal Forestry Society on ‘southern hemisphere conifers in Ireland’ (12 Feb. 1970).
