This series comprises a small collection of glass plate negative images of seventeenth century manuscripts and other original records pertaining to the lives, ministries, and writings of several early Irish Capuchins. These were acquired by Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap. (1875-1953) and Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap. (1876-1965), another prominent Irish Capuchin historian, for research and publication purposes.

The title page is annotated: ‘at the Provincial Chapter, 8th Aug. 1928, it was decided that the Conventual Mass each day was to be offered a) for the members of the Province living and dead; b) for our benefactors living and dead. This ordinance took effect beginning on 15th August 1928. Father Stanislaus Kavanagh’.

The pages have been numbered by Fr. Stanislaus. The book includes on p. 69 cuttings reporting the exiling of Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap., Church St., Dublin, referring to his arrival in New York and his meeting with Fr. Solanus Casey OFM Cap. He also refers to a letter or photograph of letter ‘written by P.H. P[earse] to Joe Pl[unkett], 1916, and which I gave you to keep. I promised a copy of it to Mrs Tom Clarke … I would be grateful if can would, at your convenience, make a copy of it and send it to her or to Miss Daly, Bakery, Sarsfield St., Limerick for her’.

Letter from Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. to Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap., referring to his difficult conditions in California. He wrote ‘The heat and I suppose change of food and water have told on me this month. I haven’t been well at all and have spent some days in bed’. Some mention is made of the political situation in Ireland: ‘Wasn’t D[e Valera]’s address after release wonderful? No word of bitterness from start to finish’. Reference is also made to Fr. Dominic O’Connor OFM Cap. and the opening of a house of studies in California. With cover.
A file containing ‘Lastre a gelatine bromuro d’argento … di Cappelli, Milano’ box containing four large plate reproductions of an original manuscript. The box cover gives two dates of 1906 and 1911 (probably company awards). A faint manuscript annotation on the box reads: ‘Catalogo Campione’. The manuscript is titled on the first plate: ‘De haeresis Anglicanae in Iberniam intrusione et progressu, et de Bell Catholico ad annum 1641 caepto, exindeque per aliquot gesto, Commentarius’. The plates are images of the original copy of the ‘Commentarius Rinuccinanus’ held in the Archivio Storico Milano. The original text was destroyed in a bombing raid on Milan during the Second World War.
The file comprises the following issues of this weekly Anti-Treaty newspaper: 3 Jan. 1922 (Vol. 1, No. 1)-29 June 1922 (Vol. 1, No. 27). The series is complete with multiple copies of some issues. The issue of 15 Mar. 1922 (no. 12) is endorsed ‘Fr. Stanislaus [Kavanagh OFM Cap.] … Dun Laoghaire’.
A file containing ‘Criterion Plates Ltd., Stechford, Birmingham’ box. The box holds four plates. The annotation on the box reads ‘Negatives of letters of Fr. Robert O’Connell OSFC in the Fr. Luke Wadding OFM [1588-1657] collection'. The annotation was made by Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap. in May 1922. The plates are labelled a-d.
A photograph of Fr. Dominic O’Connor OFM Cap. (right) and Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap. (second from left) with two unidentified republicans in Freemasons’ Hall (or ‘Masonic Hall’) on Molesworth Street in Dublin. The two Capuchin friars visited the Hall following its seizure by anti-Treaty republicans in April 1922.
