Visit of Hendrik Verwoerd to Katima Mulilo

Photographs showing the visit of Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd (1901-1966), Minister of Bantu Affairs in the South African government (he was later Prime Minister), to the Holy Family Mission at Katima Mulilo in the Caprivi Strip (situated in present-day Namibia but then under South African control). A typescript note is extant in the file. It reads: ‘The purpose of his visit to the Mission was to assess the possible implications of implanting the infamous Bantu Education Act into the Caprivi where, at the time, all the schools were administered by the Capuchins with the aid of a very meagre subsidy from the S.A. government. Dr. Verwoerd (the “architect of apartheid”, was assassinated during his reign as Prime Minister) enforced the Bantu Education Act, in the late 1950s, as a means of preventing black South Africans from receiving an education anywhere near the standard enjoyed by other ethnic groups, e.g. whites and coloureds’. One of the photographs shows Verwoerd (identified with an 'X') with various religious including Bishop Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap. and Fr. Bartholomew Prendiville OFM Cap., superior of the Katima Mulilo Mission. See also CA AMI/2/10/3/110.

Newspaper Cuttings Book

Originally a printed book: 'In memoriam, Peter Fenelon' Collier (New York: privately printed, 1910), 113 pp. The book was subsequently used to house newspaper cuttings mainly relating to the history and friars of the Capuchin community, Holy Trinity Friary in Cork. The volume includes cuttings relating to triduums, ordinations, transfers, provincial chapters, missions and retreats, the Third Order of St. Francis, a note on the Father Mathew Chalice, and various Capuchin apostolates in Cork. The volume also contains obituaries of Fr. Bernard Jennings OSFC (d. 26 Dec. 1904); Fr. Cyril O'Sullivan OSFC (9 Dec. 1921); Fr. Fiacre Brophy OSFC (d. 5 Oct. 1926). Includes an original photographic print of Fr. Fiacre’s funeral; Fr. Peter Bowe OSFC (d. 25 Nov. 1926); Fr. Dermot O’Reilly OFM Cap. (d. 9 May 1945); Fr. Crispin Brennan OFM Cap. (d. 3 July 1949); Fr. Pacificus Ryan OFM Cap. (d. 1 July 1950); Fr. John Butler OFM Cap. (d. 3 Oct. 1950); Archbishop Sylvester Mulligan OFM Cap. (d. 23 Oct. 1950); Fr. Thomas Dowling OFM Cap. A collection of prints including many of Fr. Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap. (Bishop of Livingstone from 1959-74). Most of the prints are un-captioned. The file includes prints collected for publication in 'The Capuchin Annual'. The captioned photographs include:
• Fr. Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap., Fr. Killian Flynn OFM Cap., Fr. Casimir Butler OFM Cap. and Fr. Seraphin Nesdale OFM Cap. in Northern Rhodesia in c.1931. The images were probably taken during a trip to Victoria Falls.
• Group of Irish Capuchin friars in Northern Rhodesia. Front row (from left to right): Fr. Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap., Monsignor Killian Flynn OFM Cap., Fr. Oliver O’Hanlon OFM Cap. Back row: Fr. Photographic album (titled ‘The Cambrian Album’) containing black and white prints of the early Irish Capuchin missionaries in Northern Rhodesia. Some of the prints were later annotated by Fr. Edwin Flynn OFM Cap. The album includes:

35 mm colour slides of photographs taken by Br. Joseph Murphy OFM Cap. (1929-2009). The majority are images of missionary work in Zambia. Br. Joseph ministered in Zambia from 1958-79. Many of the slides relate to the visitation of the mission undertaken by Fr. Berard Creed OFM Cap. (1923-2004), Provincial Minister, in 1968. The file includes:

• Fr. Berard inspecting construction work on mission buildings
• Capuchin friars with Irish religious sisters working in Zambia
