A guide to Ards Forest Park and Sheephaven Bay published by Irish Forest and Wildlife Service. The book has been annotated by Fr. David Kelleher OFM Cap. The guide reads: 'The Stewart family held Ards until 1926, the property being known as the Stewart-Bam estate in its later years from the marriage in 1910 of the heiress, Miss Eva Stewart to Sir Pieter Bam, a native of South Africa. The great estate was finally broken up following its acquisition by the Irish Land Commission in 1926 and the area that was to become our Forest Park came into our possession in 1929'.

Booklet for a Mass Celebration on Medal Hill (formerly Doe Chapel) near Creeslough in County Donegal to mark Fr. Theobald Mathew’s temperance gathering at the same location on 15 June 1841. The commemorative mass, which was celebrated by friars from Ard Mhuire, was held on 21 August 1988. The file also includes a photostat copy of a letter from Andrew MacIntyre (25 Feb. 1955) to Fr. David Kelleher OFM Cap. referring to Father Mathew’s temperance meeting at Cashelmore, County Donegal, in June 1841. For more on this local commemoration see CA FM/RES/4/1/3.

'A History of Ards' by Fr. David Kelleher OFM Cap. published by Ard Mhuire Capuchin Friary. The booklet traces the history of the Ards estate from its occupation by the Wrays and the Stewarts to the arrival of the Capuchins in 1930. The chapter headings include: Life in the old mansion, The auction (1927), From manor house to Capuchin Friary, Novitiate and House of Theology, Life in the Friary, and Retreat House. The file also includes typescript and manuscript drafts of the text. Some of the photographs which appeared in the publication are extant at CA DL/5/1

The report encloses statistical forms re the personnel of both the Victoria Falls Mission and the Cape Town Vicariate in South Africa. The appendix includes a section titled: ‘Report on the Capuchin Quasi-Parishes in the Cape Town Vicariate’. The Victoria Falls mission stations are listed in the statistical form as: Livingstone; Sichili; Sancta Maria; Mankoya.

Letters from the Most Rev. John Colburn Garner (1907-1993), Archbishop of Pretoria, to Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap. and Fr. Colman Griffin OFM Cap., Provincial Ministers, offering missionary work to the Irish Capuchins in the Archdiocese. The Archbishop offers the district of Rustenburg (5 Nov. 1948); Zeerust, near the boundary with Bechuanaland. He encloses a copy of an agreement between the Archdiocese and the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptortists) re work in the township of Rustenburg (5 Apr. 1953); the district of Groblersdal (1 Aug. 1955).

Letters from Bishop Hugh Boyle (1897-1986), Vicar Apostolic of Port Elizabeth, to Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap. and Fr. Colman Griffin OFM Cap., Provincial Ministers, requesting that more priests be sent to South Africa to work on local missions in the Vicariate of Port Elizabeth. The file includes correspondence with the Most Rev. Martin Lucas SVD, Apostolic Delegate to South Africa, referring to the urgent need for more missionaries in the district of Peddie, Cape Province.

A small collection of prints relating to the South African mission assembled by Fr. Benjamin O’Connell OFM Cap. (1938-2010) for historical research purposes. The file includes:
• The exterior of St. Theresa’s School in the Welcome Estate, Cape Town, South Africa. The annotation reads: ‘This part was built in 1933. Two moveable partitions made it one large room for Mass (3 classrooms). The third room (back part) added to the original 2 classrooms’.
• Capuchin friars with Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap. on the occasion of his visitation to South Africa in 1957. The friars include Fr. Jerome McQuillan OFM Cap., Fr. Carthage Ruth OFM Cap., Fr. Damascene McKenna OFM Cap., Fr. Raphael Curran OFM Cap., Fr. Agathangelus Herlihy OFM Cap. and Fr. Didacus McGrath OFM Cap.
• The exterior of Parow Church and Presbytery in Cape Town.

Correspondence, requisitions on title and other legal documents relating to transactions involving a plot of ground behind Morrison’s Quay. The plot adjoined Father Mathew Hall and occupied a site in the vicinity of the junction of Keeffe Street and Catherine Street. Musgrave Brothers Ltd. sold the plot to the Capuchin friars of Holy Trinity in 1961. Other parties with an interest in the premises included the Cork College of Commerce.

Assignment from Alicia Louisa Seward, 27 Merton Road, Bootle, Lancaster, to Fr. Justin William Hyland OFM Cap., Fr. Michael John O’Shea OFM Cap., Fr. Mel Peter Farrell OFM Cap., Fr. Matthew Donal Flynn OFM Cap., and Fr. Seraphin Thomas Nesdale OFM Cap., Father Mathew Quay, Cork, of the residue of leases dated 4 Dec. 1844 (see CA HT/2/1/1/4) and 1 Mar. 1845 (see CA HT/2/1/1/6) in consideration of £1,000. 20 Mar. 1951. With declarations, searches, solicitors’ correspondence and related records re the claims of the Capuchin friars to title on Seward properties on Charlotte Quay (later Father Mathew Quay) and on Queen Street (later Father Mathew Street). The file includes the correspondence of M.J. Hogan & Sons, solicitors, 50 South Mall, Cork, regarding efforts to trace Alicia Louisa Seward’s title to the aforementioned properties. Deed appointing new trustees to premises on Father Mathew Quay and Father Mathew Street held by an assignment of a lease dated 20 Mar. 1951 (see CA HT/2/1/2/34).
