The Indian of Yokaya
IE CA WA/7/12/12 · Item · c.1925
Part of Irish Capuchin Archives

A report titled ‘The Indian of Yokaya’, detailing the missionary efforts to convert and care for the Native American populations in Mendocino and Lake counties, California. It traces the history from early Franciscan attempts to the work of Rev. Luciano O’Suna – who established St. Turibius Mission – and Dominican Father William O’Connor. By the time of writing, the Capuchin Fathers and Dominican Sisters of Ukiah had assumed charge, ministering across four regional Rancheria churches (St. Dominic, Pinoleville; St. Joseph, Talmage; St. Patrick, Sanel; and St. Francis, Hopland). The text concludes with a description of a festive New Year’s party on 4 January held for two hundred local indigenous residents, which featured a mass, a feast, gift-giving, traditional tribal dances, and a shared prayer at the sound of the Angelus Bell.
