Correspondence, tender documents, bills of account and minutes of meetings regarding the extensive renovation work on the Church of St. Francis and adjoining Friary in Kilkenny. Cantwell Ltd., building contractors, 11 Upper Patrick Street, Kilkenny, Liam Tyrrell, painting contractor, 4 Pius XII Terrace, Circular Road, Kilkenny and Donal McDonald, stone, and marble craftsman, Maddoxtown, County Kilkenny. The main building work entailed a re-design of the sanctuary area of the Church to bring it into line with current liturgical practice, the erection of a porch at the back of the Church and the remedying of dampness and mould growth in the main body of the Church building. The work included the installation of a new central heating system and an insulated lining in all walls and roofs, the painting of all exterior walls and the replacing of windows and storm glazing. The total cost of the renovation work was £118,917.

A noted is appended to the accounts: ‘The above items were paid by cheque from bank. Some other items in connection with demolition of old house, repairing of new Alms House &c come under the ordinary expenses of the house’. Includes statement of ‘total amount of contract for addition &c to church and convent, Kilkenny, £3,430 13s 3d’. Endorsed on verso ‘statement of accounts given by Fr. Fidelis on the state of his house’.

The title page reads: ‘The ledger of the Capuchin Convent, Kilkenny, August 6th 1860 and 1861-1880’. The manuscript title is initialled by Fr. Patrick Joseph Columbus Maher OSFC. Most of the expenditure entries relate to household sundries, wages and expenses incurred for the upkeep of the church and friary. Most of the income derives from monies received at collections at Sunday mass and at vespers. Monthly totals are included. The entry for 14 Aug. 1867 is signed by the Irish Capuchin Commissionary General.

Ledger of suppliers’ current accounts

Ledger containing an alphabetically arranged listing of accounts with various suppliers mostly in Kilkenny. The volume includes accounts with Walter Lanigan, draper, J. White, organ tuner, the Hibernian Bank, the Gas Company, Coyle Brothers, stationers, the Sisters of Charity, and St. Joseph’s Schools. An index is given at the start of the volume. Manuscript title on front cover reads ‘House Ledger’.

The volume includes accounts for routine household expenses such as foodstuffs, washing, clothing, stationary and newspapers. Other expenses included wages paid to lay staff (cooks, the chapel caretaker and porters). Many of the entries are endorsed ‘transferred to ledger’. See CA KK/3/1/1.
