Letters to Germaine Stockley

Two letters to Germaine Stockley re the treatment of female republican prisoners. One of the letters is from Mary MacSwiney (Máire Nic Shuibhne). The letter refers to the release of her sister Annie MacSwiney from prison. She writes ‘I know how glad and happy you are about Annie’s release. She is getting on well but more slowly than I should like. The doctor says she must take great care for some time. Of course, she is not long out yet’. She also refers to a raid on her house and the imprisonment of other republican women.

Mass Stipend Ledger

Register of mass stipends received at the Church of St. Francis, Kilkenny. The volume includes entries relating to monies received from masses said, masses reserved and for those sent to the Provincial Minister. The final two pages of the volume contain notes re the ‘Kerwick Mass Bequest’ and to arrangements for saying masses for which stipends have been received.

The tenant was Dr Reginald Griffin, 42 Parliament Street, Kilkenny. With rent receipts, demand notices and some copy letters from Fr. Ignatius Collins OFM Cap., guardian, Walkin Street.

Correspondence re the sale of premises on Pennyfeather Lane

Letters from Lanigan & Nolan, solicitors, 81 High Street, Kilkenny, regarding the proposed sale by the Capuchin Order of premises situated on Pennyfeather Lane to James J. Farrell. The letters refer to the need to inform the Charity Commissioners of the proposals for the sale in order to obtain a vesting order. Reference is also made to negotiations with the Harty estate which holds the freehold interest in the property being sold to Farrell. With solicitors’ bill of costs.

Letters from the Most Rev. John Colburn Garner (1907-1993), Archbishop of Pretoria, to Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap. and Fr. Colman Griffin OFM Cap., Provincial Ministers, offering missionary work to the Irish Capuchins in the Archdiocese. The Archbishop offers the district of Rustenburg (5 Nov. 1948); Zeerust, near the boundary with Bechuanaland. He encloses a copy of an agreement between the Archdiocese and the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptortists) re work in the township of Rustenburg (5 Apr. 1953); the district of Groblersdal (1 Aug. 1955).

Photographic albums of Fr. Owen O’Sullivan OFM Cap. The albums cover the years from 1971-1998 and include some personal, family and holiday (Ireland, Poland, Italy, and Bulgaria) photographs and prints relating to Fr. Owen’s missionary work in New Zealand and later in Zambia. He was resident in Zambia from 1978 to 1997. Most of the prints have been annotated by Fr. Owen on the reverse. The prints include:
