Tuam Sugar Beet Factory, County Galway

An aerial view of the Tuam Sugar Beet Factory in about 1940. Manufacturing operations began in the factory in November 1934. The factory was a mainstay of the local economy and remained the principal employer in Tuam and the surrounding countryside for much of the twentieth century. It was finally closed in January 1987 and the plant was subsequently demolished.

A view of Kilsheelan (Cill Síoláin), a small village in County Tipperary, in about 1930. Situated on the north bank of the River Suir, Kilsheelan is located about eight kilometres from Clonmel and eleven kilometres from Carrick-on-Suir.

West Gate Tower, Wexford

A view of West Gate Tower in Wexford in about 1950. The tower in the photograph was originally called Selskar Gate and served as a private entrance to Selskar Abbey rather than as a public town gate. The image shows the structure in a rather dilapidated state (complete with pigeon coops fixed to the walls). In the 1990s, Selskar Gate underwent a complete restoration and was renamed West Gate Tower serving as an important reminder of Wexford’s built heritage.

Views of Irish Life

A bound volume containing photographic prints complied for publication and illustrative purposes by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. A manuscript annotation to the spine reads ‘Views’. Many of the prints are of scenic locations in Ireland (ecclesiastical sites, landscapes on the western seaboard, particularly in County Kerry), rural life, turf-cutting during the Emergency, and prominent individuals, both lay and clerical. The album includes the following prints (the index number refers to the pagination within the volume):

Recess Railway Station, County Galway

A view of the railway station in the small village of Recess (in Irish ‘Sraith Saileach’) in County Galway. The station is located on the northwest corner of Glendollagh Lough. It was one of several stations that ran through central Connemara on the Galway to Clifden line of the Midland Great Western Railway which opened in 1895.

Commercial Buildings, Dame Street, Dublin

A view of the courtyard of the eighteenth-century Commercial Buildings on Dame Street in Dublin. The building was used a meeting place by the Ouzel Galley Society, a representative body of city merchants which later became the Dublin Chamber of Commerce. It was demolished to enable the construction of the Central Bank of Ireland building in the 1970s.
