Aerial Views

Photographic prints of aerial views of Irish towns and notable landmarks. Most of the prints were created by the Irish Air Corps. Some of the images are from the 'Irish Press'. The prints were seemingly acquired with a view to publication in 'The Capuchin Annual'. The file includes the following images:

Photographic prints compiled for an article by Daphne Pochin Mould (1920-2014) titled ‘Aerial Views of Treasured Shrines Destroyed by Invaders’, published in 'The Capuchin Annual' (1975). With a covering letter from Daphne Pochin Mould to Fr. Henry Anglin OFM Cap. (3 June 1974). The file includes aerial views of the following (mostly ruined) medieval sites in Ireland:

Afforestation Scheme

File of documents (mainly from the County Donegal Committee of Agriculture) re a scheme to encourage landholders to plant trees on their lands in the county. The file includes information sheets and blank application forms relating to the proposal to plant conifers for a ‘shelter belt scheme in arable fields which cannot be cultivated in the usual way, on steep banks or hillsides, rocky or broken ground practically bare of vegetation, … and in swamps and bogs which cannot be reclaimed for agricultural purposes’. The file also includes a letter from A.M.S. Hanan re an article for the Royal Forestry Society on ‘southern hemisphere conifers in Ireland’ (12 Feb. 1970).

Africa comes to Cork

A clipping of an article titled ‘Africa comes to Cork’ in the Cork Examiner referring to an exhibition of hand-carved wooden objects, ritual dance masks and other artefacts from Zambia in Cork City Hall. The exhibition was organised by Fr. Conleth McConville OFM Cap. to raise money to support the work of the eighty Capuchin missionaries in Zambia.

African Adventure

Publication by Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap. on the Irish Capuchin mission in Barotseland, Northern Rhodesia. Published by 'The Father Mathew Record' Office, Dublin. The book summarizes Fr. O’Mahony’s experiences during a visitation to the Cape Province (South Africa) and to Northern Rhodesia in 1935. The chapter headings are: A new venture; the missionary idea; mysterious Africa; gateway of the Cape; from the Cape to Livingstone; the Barotse people; exploring; to Mongu; the religious of the Barotse.

African Mission Album of Fr. Albert Hayes OFM Cap.

Photographic album of Fr. Albert Hayes OFM Cap. (1915-2005). The album contains un-captioned black and white photographic prints. Fr. Albert was resident in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) from 1945-67. The volume contains captioned prints relating to Fr. Albert’s ministry in the country including:
• Bishop Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap. with first communicants in Livingstone.
• Interior views of the High Altar and Sanctuary of St. Theresa’s Church, Livingstone.
• An aerial view of St. Theresa’s Church and the surrounding suburbs of Livingstone.
• Views of Victoria Falls, Northern Rhodesia.
• Altar servers.
• Excursion trips for Altar servers.
• First Holy Communion Day in Livingstone in 1948 and 1952. The names of the parents and children are given in captions.
• The wedding of Mr and Mrs Butcher in Livingstone.
• Fr. Albert Hayes OFM Cap. (1915-2005) with African religious sisters at an air-strip in Northern Rhodesia.

African Mission Album of Fr. Alfred O’Mahony OFM Cap.

A small album containing photographic negative sheets compiled by Fr. Alfred O’Mahony OFM Cap. (1912-1988) mostly relating to the work of Irish Capuchin missionaries in Africa. An annotation on the inside cover reads: ‘Fr. Alfred O’Mahony / Sancta Maria / Mongu / Northern Rhodesia’. The album has a manuscript index to the contents. The album includes images of baptisms, school groups, religious sisters in Lukulu, Sichili, Livingstone and Sawmils in Northern Rhodesia, and in Langa, Athlone and Parow in Cape Town, South Africa. Images of Victoria Falls (1942) and the Zambezi River are also extant in the file. There are also prints of groups of friars in Rochestown College, County Cork (1931-2), and in Knock, County Mayo (1940).
