The testimonial reads ‘Dr. O’Hickey has for many years taken a leading part in the promotion of the national Language Movement, which, in the belief of men of a parties, has inspired Ireland with a new life and a new power. It is now some years since the plain-spoken and telling words of his published addresses on Irish Education laid the foundation of a great reform in the then almost hopelessly Anglicised school systems of Ireland’. The testimonial includes a lengthy list of subscribers who have contributed to the fund.

The play covers the period from the 1913 lock-out to the1916 Rising by chronicling the life of James Connolly described as ‘Ireland’s first Socialist martyr’. A performance of Slater’s play was produced by the Left Theatre Company at the La Scala Theatre in Dublin in April 1936.

She left government in protest over the adoption of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and was a vociferous opponent of the agreement in the ensuing the Civil War. She travelled to the United States in early 1922 as a republican delegate and her lecture tour in the country (she visited Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, and Philadelphia) aroused considerable interest. Her tour also reputedly raised $50,000 to support the republican cause.
