The United Irishman

'The United Irishman' was an Irish nationalist newspaper co-founded by Arthur Griffith and William Rooney. The first publication was issued on 4 Mar. 1899 it ran until 1906. It was sub-titled ‘A National Weekly Review’. The file contains the issue of 23 Apr. 1904 (Vol. 11 No. 269). This edition published copy correspondence from the Capuchin Friary in Cork relating to the ‘Vindication of Monsignor Persico’ (pp 2-3).

Abstract of title to Protestant Hall and Assembly Rooms

Abstract of title of the trustees of the Protestant Hall and Assembly Rooms Association to the premises adjoining Queen Street, parish of Holy Trinity, Cork. The abstract provides a recital of the title to the said premises commencing with a lease dated 1 Sept. 1862 from Robert Warner to Thomas Ronayne Sarsfield of a portion of the said property for 750 years at the yearly rent of £40 (see CA HT/2/1/1/13). The abstract concludes with a recital of an indenture dated Mar. 1905 assigning the residue of the aforementioned lease to the trustees of the Assembly Rooms. With a cover letter and abstract of encumbrances attached to the property. See also CA HT/2/1/1/36.

Assignment of a lease from Margaret Maughan, High Street, Dublin, to Thomas Murphy, 27 Cabra Road, Dublin, of premises on Bow Street now in the possession of Thomas Fallon for the residue of the term of two hundred years specified in the original lease of the said property dating to 11 May 1843. In consideration of £110.

Copy Will and Probate of Matthew Murphy

Copy will and probate of Matthew Murphy, 43 Montpellier Hill, Dublin, veterinary surgeon (d. 15 Nov. 1897). He devises the rents and profits accruing from his various properties (including premises on Bow Street) to his nieces Elizabeth and Mary Anne Murphy. They are to be paid an annuity of £25 per annum. The probate was granted on 4 January 1898. The certified copy of the will and probate were made on 26 August 1904. With a statutory declaration by Matthew Murphy stating that he is the eldest son of Matthew Murphy (d. 15 Nov. 1897) and that his mother (Ellen Murphy) was a daughter of Thomas Fallon (d. 20 Sept. 1871). The declaration is signed 26 August 1904.

Correspondence re the establishment of the Catholic Boys’ Brigade in Kilkenny

Letter from the Most Rev. Abraham Brownrigg, Bishop of Ossory, to Fr. Peter Bowe OSFC, Provincial Minister, referring to an anonymous letter published in the 'Kilkenny Journal' appearing to advocate ‘the introduction of a Boys’ Brigade into Kilkenny to be worked by and under the supervision of your fathers in Walkin Street’. Brownrigg expresses his disapproval of such a proposal. With a letter from Fr. Jarlath Hynes OSFC assuring the Bishop that ‘our fathers in Kilkenny have no knowledge whatsoever of the anonymous letter … nor has there ever been any question or thought amongst us … of having anything to do with a Boys’ Brigade in your city’.

Will and codicil of Elizabeth Roche

Will of Elizabeth Roche of Ormonde Road, Kilkenny. She bequeathed to the Most Rev. Abraham Brownrigg, Bishop of Ossory ‘all monies in my name in government stock in trust … to pay the guardian of the Order of Franciscans in the City of Kilkenny ten pounds yearly for masses for the repose of my soul and those of the deceased members of my family to be celebrated in public in Ireland …’. The codicil is dated 26 Oct. 1904.
