Cutting from the 'Cork Examiner', 20 Oct. 1938, reporting on the opening of a bazaar in Father Mathew Hall, Cork, to aid the work of the Capuchin African missions.

Cutting of an article from 'The Southern Cross', 16 Nov. 1938, lamenting the recent departure of Fr. Alban Cullen OFM Cap. for California. The article reads: ‘Fr. Alban arrived in Cape Town some nine years ago and took over what was then a struggling, obscure little mission, know as St. Raphael’s, Athlone, Cape Flats, and now, on his departure, we find a handsome and commodious church … [and] a dignified and roomy presbytery’.

Report on the Irish Capuchin mission in South Africa. It is noted that ‘much of the Fathers’ time is taken up with convert work, pre-nuptial courses and teaching Christian Doctrine to children attending the public schools’. Statistical information (population, racial composition, and number of priests) is given in respect of the friars’ work in Parow, Athlone, the Welcome Estate, Belgravia and Langa. It is affirmed that the ‘bulk of the non-white people, i.e. the poorest of this diocese, is attended by the Capuchin Fathers’.

Report on the prospects of the South African mission by Fr. Edward Walsh OFM Cap. and Fr. Canice Bourke OFM Cap., St. Mary’s, Cape Town for Fr. Kevin Moynihan OFM Cap., Provincial Minister. The report refers to a meeting with Bishop Bernard Cornelius O’Riley, Vicar Apostolic of the Cape of Good Hope, to discuss the areas (Athlone and Parow) which have been offered to the Irish Capuchins. A description of both districts and their populations is given. The financing of the proposed mission is also referred to. The report notes that ‘there is a well-disposed Catholic in Athlone, a Mr. Murphy, who came to the Cape during the Boer War, and settled here’. The report also affirms that ‘the people seem to want us badly in Athlone – there certainly is a hunger for a priest there’.

A report on Irish Capuchin missions in the Cape Province at Parow, Matroosfontein, Athlone, and Langa. Reference is made to the building and staffing of churches, friaries, schools, and halls at these locations.

Accounts, publicity material (catalogue) and correspondence relating to the Foreign Missionary Exhibition held at 86 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin, 17-25 June 1932. The official catalogue includes a list of items displayed by the friars relating to their missionary work in Africa and a photographic print of the Capuchin exhibition stand. The file also includes display cards and captions for the artefacts exhibited by the Capuchins at the event. The caption cards read as follows:

Notebook containing a record of the baptisms at the Loanja mission, Bartoseland, Northern Rhodesia. The record (which includes entries of adult baptisms and references to 'articulo mortis' or 'at the moment of death') was compiled by Fr. Seraphin Nesdale OFM Cap. (1897-1980). The entries are listed under local (birth) name, tribe, village, Christian name, date of baptism, minister officiating, date, and in some instances date of death and place of burial. The end pages of the volume also contain miscellaneous notes re baptisms at the mission. With manuscript annotations (in Irish) by Fr. Padraig Ó Cuill OFM Cap. re Fr. Seraphin.
